Solved: Help ! Personal Guard Killed My OS - PC will not boot!
Hi . . . my PC, a Dell XPS 400 w/ Windows XP Media Edition, became infected with Personal Guard spyware.....Tried to remove with MalWare Bytes but it wouldn't let me get to the .exe file for it.... Tried deleting the files, and registry data for it....still didn't work....Finally the machine shut down and now wil not boot up..... The Dell POST screen loads, but then it sticks trying to load Windows...... Any help would be mucho appreciated

When trying to boot in safe mode, I get the "blue screen of death". It says the following:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Do you have a Windows XP disc?

Also if you press Ctrl+F11 while you start your computer the dell has a hidden recovery partition.

I do have the disc and have tried booting with it. nothing . . .no recovery panel or anything.... tried going into setup and changing the boot order too..

Also, F11 doesn't seem to do anything . . .

Are you pressing Ctrl with it also? Right after you turn it on just keep pressing Ctrl+F11 over and over.

Also after you change your boot order are you saving before you exit the BIOS.

Just got into the Dell PC Restore (Ctr+F11). Don't want to lose my data. Options are Restore(lose data) or Reboot...

And yes, I have been saving the changes in BIOS

Was there any option to pull up the recovery console? Or any command line. If not you would need to boot to a windows XP disc to get the recovery console and run a CHKDSK on your hard drive or a repair install just to get it to boot and get your data.

If you have a USB drive handy here is an article on how to get the windows xp disc booting off a flash drive.

There was no option for the recovery console, or a command line. Is it possible that the restore option would take me to the recovery console?

Also, I read the article and I'm not completely understanding it... Not quite sure how it works..... I assume that I need to format the flashdrive on a different computer than the one I am trying to repair. This laptop that I am writing on runs on Vista..Does that matter? Can I use a Compact Flash card with a USB 2.0 reader instead of the standard stick flashdrive? Are there any other options besides this?

My Dell disc is titled:
Operating System
Reinstallation DVD
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Rollup 2

Would resetting the CMOS help?

Just got into the Recovery Console. Now I have a command prompt.

Ran CHKDSK
CHKDSK found one or more errors on the volume

Now What?
