4 bit resolution after xp pro upgrade
I upgraded an emachines t2542 from xp home to pro. Now I can't fix the resoluyion past 4 bits. Did the advanced settings, but all that is listed is "default monitpr" with no option to click on 'properties'. Went into device manager and there is no 'display' tab. The only items with ???? on them are an audio and a 'vga' device. I tried to update driver for vga, but it says it cannot be found even though I have the HP 17vs disk in. Any ideas? Loading in safe mode yields same results.

You want this download link: http://downloads.emachines.com/drive..._13_1_3510.zip

That is your video card driver, which you need to have installed in order to do any sort of resolution adjustments. Windows is really bad at finding drivers by itself, you usually have to go online to your computer manufacturer's website to find the drivers.

PS: This is the link for your audio card driver: http://downloads.emachines.com/drive..._10_0_5250.zip

Here are some newer versions. They're both in .exe format, so there's no unzipping to do. Just double-click the file to start the install process.

Realtek AC'97 Audio (Select one of the "MajorGeeks - USA" download links)

Driver Version: 4.06 (5.10.0.6300)

Intel 845 Graphics Controller (Select the "Download" link)

Driver Version: 14.10.3 (6.14.10.4342)

----------------------------------------------------------------

Before you do a hard drive format and fresh install of an operating system, or before you upgrade to a newer operating system, it's a very good idea to have the devices(video, audio, network, chipset) identified in a computer and to have the device drivers available before you start.

Here is the EMachines support and drivers download site for the T2542.
