Solved: blue screen registry_error 0x00000051 no safe mode
I'm repeatedly getting the blue screen of death, on my Dell latitude x300 XP pro SP3

The latest software event was an automatic update for IE. It was on restart that the screen started.

REGISTRY_ERROR

Tech Info:
*** STOP: 0x00000051 (0x00000001,0xE2179008,0x02566000,0x000001D6)

Now I can't even get it to start in safe mode, or safe with command prompt, or previous settings that worked.

I was able to get to some diagnostics and when it ran all "blue screen" tests they all passed.

As I watch it try to start in safe mode it always seems to hang when it gets to "agpcpq.sys" if that's significant?

I have some orig. discs, drivers etc. but not the system disk.

I downloaded the rc.iso - but couldn't get to recovery without BSOD.

I've run across some suggestions online but they all assume I can get into my system somehow.

I downloaded "UBCD4WinV350.EXE" and ordered system discs. I'm hoping that might allow me to boot to windows...?

Ideas? I'm open.
Thanks...

Is re-installing windows an option to you? Use BartPE and an external hard disk to backup your data if available or otherwise just plain dvd's

I'd rather save some data, if possible before reinstalling windows.
I have a large outboard hard drive I can backup to, if I can get booted with my usb ports functioning.

It looks like BartPE is similar to UBCD4Win in that they both build boot CDs in conjunction with system disks... yes? Do you find BartPE preferrable in some way? Anything that works is fine with me. As I mentioned I ordered a replacement system disc but it hasn't arrived yet, so either approach will have to wait a bit.

Actually UBCD4Win is based of bartpe with the main difference that ubc4win has more plug-ins available. Any of the two will get the job done But I think for the simple task of backing-up BartPE is more suitable. With BartPE you get to build your cd from the beginning (except for some tools already included) and its just a mere 3.15 mb, on the other hand UBCD4Win has many utilities (which are not need in your case) built-in and its size exceeds 250mb.

That does sound better for what I need to do. I've down loaded BartPE and as soon as my new system disk hits my mail box, I'll give it a go.
Since I may end up reinstalling winXP on my ailing dell... I thought I ran across some backup software that is designed to assist with reinstalling programs when you do a reformat of a drive. Do you know of such a thing?
Thanks again for your help on this.

I don't think such a thing is possible and this is because software tend to install files in different places on your system e.g. different folders, the registry etc

The only thing I can do for you is to suggest a program/service that installs some popular software en mass. Here is the link.

For some reason I couldn't get BartPE to build with the drivers to access any of my external drives.
I was able to get UBCD4Win to build a disc that got me booted. Now I can see my files in my C drive.
I was trying to access my WD MYBook 1 TB drive, but couldn't get it to mount. I also wasn't able to get my network access working, so couldn't go online to find drivers. I was able to get it to recognize a USB 16 gig card reader.
This would allow me to rescue my files but oddly I can't get them to copy over to that drive? I saw that drag and drop doesn't work, but neither does selecting the files and folders tasks in the side bar. I'm hoping it's something simple I'm missing.
Ideas? Thanks...

I got a tip to try Unstoppable Copier and it appears to be saving my C drive.
Life is sweet again.
Thanks...

Hmmm... using UBCD4Win I was able to copy my C drive so all my files are safe, however when I try to use the system disk to reinstall windows when I get to the license agreement I get the blue screen again? When I hit F8 to accept, it says "looking for previous version of Windows", then the same blue screen pops up.
Is there something I can do when booted with my UBCD4Win disc to prepare to reinstall Windows?
Thanks...

Try wiping the old system first before installing the new one. Use dban to remove every trace of your old system

Thanks for that tip. The dban worked great.

And I have loaded all my drivers but can't seem to get my wifi working. Is there a way to discover which wifi card my laptop has? Dell Latitude x300 shipped with quite a few... they list over twenty dif. drivers at Dell support.

I have a copy of my whole Cdrive from before I wiped it. Wouldn't my wifi network settings be stored somewhere on there?

The wifi worked great before.

Thanks

Try the Intel Driver with the name PRO/Wireless network connection. It's towards the end of the Network category

OK, I worked that out. I think I'm out of the woods now. Just a long list of programs to reinstall, but that sure is better than losing all my data!
Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate it.
All the best,
David
