billjh@centu,

Click in the Search History field and select View By Date from the drop-down list.

Enter the following command and click OK:

billjh@centu, Did you check your "Browsing history" settings under the General tab in Internet Options? Make sure that you don't have the "Delete browsing history on exit" checkmarked. Also click the Settings button and make sure that the "days to keep pages in history" is not set to 0 (zero).

It is all set as you have stated. Now I find that clicking on the tab to view the temp. files
does not even open into a window ??

You could try to repairing IE by resetting it. According to M$ this will repair damaged files:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
  4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.
I've never run the Reset for IE. If you would like to see what it does before trying it, click on the How does resetting effect my computer? link next to the Reset button.

If all else fails and no one else has any suggestions you could try downloading and reinstalling IE 8:
