"installing updates" on XP shut down
I have two aged Dell Computers running Windows XP, a Dimension 4600 (our family workhorse) and an reconditioned older one the kids have been using. In both cases, whenever either computer is shut down there is usually a note that several upgrades have to be completed. I'm convinced that the upgrades are never successfully completed. If after I reboot, I immediately shut down again, there are the same number waiting to be completed.

Is there some way to get some control over this process? I'd like to at least find out what upgrades are in the pipeline and see which ones move through it.

Thanks for your help.

u can try going to microsoft or windows update and see what updates are there for u. theres express or custom install. use the express and go from there whatever needs to be updated will be. sometimes u are told to restart the computer so the updates will take effect.restart and then u should be all set till the next update.

XP Updates can be seen in Control Panel>Add and Remove Programmes by ticking the Show Updates box. If you aren't certain any have completed, it's best to trigger new downloads.

In My Computer, go to Windows then Software Distribution. Open that and click the Edit menu then Select All and hit your Delete key and OK. Then you can either just wait for updates to come through or go to the update site by going through Automatic Updates from Control Panel and clicking the link.

Thanks for the tips. They don't address my problem, which is that Windows Update does not appear to be working correctly. There is always an update waiting to be installed when I shut down. Then if I reboot and shut down immediately--even without logging onto my desktop--there is still an update to be installed.

I want to find out what has not been properly installed and is perhaps clogging up the pipeline. I'm also getting messages of updates that have failed. Most recently it is a "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)." That one has failed every time through at least a dozen attempts.

Is it failing because some earlier update never finished? Or is that the installation I will watch flounder every time I shut the system down? How does one check? I'm sure there's some place in the register.

Thanks again.

If you cleared out everything from Soft Distribution, the system should have reconstituted the necessary files and you would have seen new Updates being downloaded. When prompted, the trick is to click on Custom so you can read through the list, or in a proper process of elimination, install only one at a time. Go back into Software Distribution and see if there's anything in the Download folder

I cleared out Soft Distribution/Downloads, but I haven't seen any new Updates being downloaded. I have the "notify me" setting checked. The Security Update for XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 is still waiting to be installed. At least a dozen attempts have failed.

Since I cleared out Soft Distribution, 7 new objects have appeared in the download folder. Please help me understand. Are these are waiting to complete installation when I shut down? Or are they objects that have been successfully installed? If the former, that means that after a successful installation the object should no longer appear in the SoftDist/download folder?

Thanks again.
