Malwarebytes came up clean and SUPERAntiSpyware found a few adware tracking cookies - which is normal.

Keep these 2 anti-spyware/anti-malware programs in your computer. About once or twice a month, update them and run a quick scan with them and let the fix everything they find. You'll keep spyware and malware in check by doing this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Now we need to trim down the startup load.

Can you advise what peripherals(printer, scanner, camera, webcam, iPod, etc.) you use with or have connected to this computer?

Let's get the startup load trimmed down. Some of these entries don't need to load and run at all, and some of them can be manually started when needed.

(Note: .exe or some other part of the name may be missing.)

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in:

SigmatelSysTrayApp - stsystra.exe

NvCplDaemon - RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

nwiz - nwiz.exe

NVHotkey - rundll32.exe nvHotkey.dll

NvMediaCenter - RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

PCMService C:\Program Files\Dell\MediaDirect\PCMService.exe

Google Desktop Search C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe

Google Update C:\Documents and Settings\Shaz Khan\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe

Messenger (Yahoo!) C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\YahooMessenger.exe

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Wwithout Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on or right-click and then click Properties on:

Google Desktop Manager 5.9.909.30391 (GoogleDesktopManager-093009-130223) - Google

Google Software Updater (gusvc) - Google

Java Quick Starter (JavaQuickStarterService) - Sun Microsystems, Inc.

NVIDIA Display Driver Service (NVSvc) - NVIDIA Corporation

Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation

Yahoo! Updater (YahooAUService) - Yahoo! Inc.

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual and then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, close the services window and then restart your computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears on the desktop, ignore the message. Put a checkmark in that window and then click OK.

Start HijackThis and run a scan, then post that new log here.

I don't use nor have anything to do with external hard drives, so I can't address that problem.

I back up all my personal data on CD-R's.

Hello Cookiegal. I think your comment is a bit harsh all you have to do is re-tick any unticked boxes as for "In your dreams". I will add no further comment.
