Start HijackThis and run a scan, then put a checkmark in these 3 entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll

O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar BHO - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll

O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll

then click Fix Checked - Yes.

Run a second scan, then post that new log here.

This startup entry

MSMSGS C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

is associated with Windows Messenger(a very old chat program that's part of Windows and can't be uninstalled).

It'll keep rechecking itself every time you start your computer if you don't disable it within the program.

Start Windows Messenger, go into Tools - Options - Preferences, uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts", click Apply - OK, then close the program.

Do all the windows updates and security updates cause the PC to use more memory?
Windows itself doesn't really use a lot of memory, depending on your settings. Your background, desktop icons, visual settings etc, as well as settings for networking/Internet (DNS, DHCP), as well as anything else that Windows uses, use up memory as and when it is needed. This is pretty much unavoidable.

What's limiting you is your installed programs. Your security software (antivirus, antispyware etc) is a necessary thing, but it uses memory as it runs as well. For the most part, these programs set themselves to open at startup, so that you are somewhat protected from malware straight off the bat. The problem in your case is that these programs sit in memory and stay there, once again reducing the amount of available RAM.

Anything else that you may run, whether it be at startup or on a per-need basis, also takes up RAM.

To elaborate on this, because there is only so much memory to go around, your computer will swap programs between the memory and the page file on the hard drive as they are required (anything you need here-and-now is kept in memory, anything you (or your computer) haven't looked at in a while is transferred to the page file). The process is pretty much transparent to you as a user, but when you pull something back from the page file, there is a significant delay since the response speed of the hard drive is slower than the response speed of RAM.

If you are unsure, go to this link and download the scanner tool. What it will do is check your computer to see how many slots you have to use and what type of memory. When you run it, it may look like nothing has happened, but what it will do is check your computer then pull up their website with all of your information that you need. The memory specifications will be below on the page, the one you want to look for is PC-xxxx (where xxxx is a number, for example, PC3200). We can then show you where it is cheapest to get it.
