Acer Aspire 5602WLMi BSOD Endless Restarting
Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 5602 WLMi and recently I encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts.

Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor."

Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch??

Thanks,

If you tap Function 8 as you start the computer and before Windows starts to load, you should see the extended Safe Mode menu which includes "Disable automatic restart on system failure". Highlight and accept that one and post back the details on the blue screen. As for the BIOS, it sounds as though the machine was set up to be closely controlled in a network - did you buy it knowing that?

ok here are the results:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these stems:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000023 (0x000E0100, 0XF79086CC, 0XF79083C8, 0X86E8B5DF)

It is actually my friends laptop, and it was a personal computer he purchased from a store. He asked me to fix it, I thought it would involve a simple formatting process and installing a new OS. However,it seems Acer has locked the Boot Sequence to protect the user??

Any further assistance is appreciated

my friend did not do a disk defragmentation, delete a partition, or removing a usb storage device.....so how do i get around this. it would be ideal if I could just change the boot sequence, but its not allowing me to

Maybe they had the foresight to put the CD first so - apologies in advance - silly question time; have you tried a disk to see if it actually does boot?

yes I used the copy successfully on my desktop to install windows so I know it does in fact boot.

I heard the way to reset the bios settings (so that I can change the boot sequence) is by removing the CMOS battery?? how do I do this on the laptop?

Something I wouldn't even attempt unless it was one I'd take apart before. In any event, it may not even be possible once you get in there and if it worked, it would also default all the other BIOS settings.

My question was not does the CD itself actually work but have you tried the CD in this laptop. I asked only in case the manufacturer had set BIOS to boot from CD first before seeming to lock the BIOS menus.

The XP CD you do have is all you need to get into Windows Repair option. If you were to use the Acer recovery CD, that would revert everything in the box to the day it left the factory which isn't what you want.

Editing to point out that in your first post, you said you want to reinstall. That you can only do if the Windows XP CD you use is legitimate and not in use on any other computer. The CD will, however, offer you some repairing options and I suggest when you get to the Command Prompt it offers, you type in fixmbr and hit enter, accept the warning and when that completes, type fixboot and hit Enter again. Accept the warning again and type exit to leave the utility and restart. The above may be enough to sort things out for you

I am using a windows 7 install cd to just format and install windows 7 instead, but since the boot sequence in the bios has the hd above the cd drive it doesnt even ask me if I want to boot from cd.

If i use a windows xp install cd will it ask me about recovery if I cant even get the option of booting from cd??
