Ok, so I received the order confirmation for my recovery disks via e-mail. When I checked the e-mail to verify the information for the notebook I inquired about, it lists the model number as: 438958-001. I thought the model number was EH443UA#ABA, which is listed as the p/n on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop. The e-mail does, however, list the correct serial number. What am I missing here? I just wanna make sure I receive the right disks. I called HP Customer Service to confirm this, but I'm not sure if the operator really understood what I was asking and just pacified me in order to get me off the phone by telling me I would receive the right disks.

It's probably the part/model number of the disks, not the computer.

US Product Number EH443UA#ABA

When the disks come you will see the Part Number on something, if I recall the enclosed paperwork.

dv1411se is your HP Pavilion model (Thousands upon thousands of the same model exist.....)

The other things the serial number = to identify each MACHINE, like your car has a VIN <<It's unique identifying code number.

The Part Number= a specific part, and it could be the computer case for all I know.

The disks have a part number and that should be the 001-several more numbers type thing....mine were like that. Usually it has a Build# and then the code...that is not important.

Just the serial number might be, but the warranty is probably way past expired and the Model ID number, is about all you need dv1411se That identifies your notebook as far as anything to do with Parts, Drivers, Product Information.....all part of Support.

My recovery disks finally arrived! So here are a couple (probably expected) questions:

After I pop in the operating system CD and choose the option to install Windows XP, this message comes up:

The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was unable to load the file D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETUPGRD.DLL.
The system cannot find the file specified.

What does this mean? When I acknowledge the message and press OK, it goes on with the installation anyway. Is it cool to continue?

Also, after the computer restarts on it's own and goes through the process of loading files and all that, it comes to a screen that gives me a list of existing partitions to select (or delete). It lists these 3:

C: Partition1 [NTFS] 76105 MB <61065 MB free>
Unpartitioned Space 8 MB
E: Partition2 [Unknown] 204 MB <203 MB free>

What exactly are these and why does it give you the option to delete them?

Hi!
Were you able to, or do you think you need to copy any files from the computer hard drive before you do the Recovery? Any documents....pictures...etc?

If you are all set, think again....do you have a copy of your Favorites file to replace in the browser of choice? Do you have downloaded material (not installed programs...files from the Internet, friends, etc) that you do not have copied to external media?
OK.....when ready to do the factory restore.....Full Recovery.....

Yes, that message means you can only do a Full Recovery of the system (also called return to factory condition, etc).

The Recovery disks only do that type of installation. You also might have the newest Service Pack for XP installed, and you might not have that as part of the Recovery set, and when you boot with the original CD you can get messages like that.

I would advise you once again, to read through the items here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=1130589 and to read all the items, there are many situations covered there.

And also, here : (Scroll and/or read down the page to this category> Reinstall Windows using the Operating System Disc

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00681978

and that is the steps to do the Recovery (to start the process).

Those are the partitions (divisions) of the hard disk in your computer now.

Leave the E: and Unpartitioned space 8MB alone...the Recovery process takes care of them, they are normal, and part of the hard drive and Windows on an HP computer.

The steps tell you

This means for your C: Partition1 [NTFS] 76105 MB partition, this is the one to select to install Windows XP onto.

You get the option to Delete partitions because sometimes, there are problems with formatting or installing, or using one. Then you can make new and different sized partitions.....in case you had made an error the first time, etc For your purposes, do not choose to delete anything, only choose to install Windows onto the main or Drive C: partition.
