Need "Spacer" on Custom Toolbar (XP)
My old laptop died and I am trying to recreate my environment on my replacement. I use a custom toolbar with all of my frequently used programs. I cannot remember how I did it before, but I used to have some sort of invisible gif that I used in my toolbar folder (in C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\My Documents\) that I could use to create nice groupings of Icons on my toolbar (e.g., MS Office <space> Accessories <space> work tools).

Can anyone guide me through this? I tried creating a file using a non-printable character and even made up a new file extension. But now, if I click on it, I get a dialog box asking me to pick a program to use. I do not believe that ever happened to me on my old PC.

Thanks,
Matt

Are you talking about when you take a folder and drag it to the side of the screen and it becomes a toolbar? You could always get a program like rocketdock or something to do the same sorta thing for you.

No. I already have my custom toolbar. I am just trying to make it look the way I want with spacers and/or separators (that "bar" thing) so I can separate different categories of programs/icons.

Thanks,
Matt

I right-clicked the toolbars, selected "New Toolbar" and pointed it to a folder containing shortcuts I use frequently. I am not running java or anything like that. I need something static to use as a separator. I created a new "filetype" that has no icon to use as a spacer. However, if I accidentally click on it, Windows gives me a dialog box asking me what program I want to use to open it. I would like something to use that does not produce this effect.

I can live with this--it's nothing earth-stopping--but I'd love to make this simpler. I used to have something on my old laptop that worked fine w/o the dialog box. It's just that my old hard drive completely died (swing arm clacks across the platters endlessly) and I lost whatever was on it. So I cannot remember how I did this before.

Thanks,
Matt
