The Infamous: "There are no active mixer devices. Please install...."
Volume on my laptop does not work. When I click on my volume control I get the infamous error message. Full message: There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close."

I've tried numerous searches on google/forums but nothing seems to work. I tried the services.smc, Ive tried the "machine.inf" copy/paste method. Tried to reset the BIOS to default in the setup menu (not sure if i really did this right but...). Nothing seems to be working.

The sound worked before I had to delete the partition and reinstall Windows XP. Had a virus or something so I had to delete the partition and reinstall like I said. It's Windows XP Professional.

I got the laptop from Cyberpowerpc.com. Phoenix brand motherboard (i think that is a brand, Everest said the BIOS type was phoenix anyway, it says the actual motherboard name is Unkown). When I bought it, the sound said: Built-In AC97 Sound Card if that helps. I was pretty sure I had "Realtek AC 97" Audio driver before the crash but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Mothboard ID (not sure what this is, its from "Everest" ): MVINA001.86C.0000.D.0810221521

My Processor is Intel if that helps...
OS: Win XP Professional
I tried installing Windows service pack 3 but it said I already had it? (maybe it came with my windows installation)

I have "Everest" so let me know what other specs you might need.

I've been at this for a few weeks off and on (I have school and work). Would really appreciate some help. I feel like this is unfixable….

Have you checked the windows audio service is started

Go to Start --> Run, and type in services.msc.

A window will pop up with a list of services. Scroll down to Windows Audio. Right-click
and click on Properties.

Make sure that "Startup type" is set to automatic. Also, make sure, under "Service
status," start is selected.

OK I did it. I guess I'm posting what it says under "main circuit board"? Here's what it has under that.

Board: COMPAL JHL90 REFERENCE
BIOS: COMPAL 1.10 10/22/2008

OK I downloaded the XP one and installed it and then rebooted. Prettymuch the same thing happened as the other realtek audio driver. But as I was unzipping it I did notice that it said Vista and I know I clicked the XP one...not sure if this matters heh. When I come back from starting up nothing about the audio driver being successful shows btw (not sure if anything is supposed to happen but nothing does).

there is a menu called Sound, video, and game controllers.

Under that menu (when I click on the plus button to bring it down) there are 5 more items in this order.

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

Thats the only thing I can see concerning audio.
