XP Boot up freezes at black screen; reboots again and again

Have had XP for a few years, then on Friday 13th, system started to boot up; froze at the black XP screen. Then computer does a quick hard boot-up again (sounds like electrical cutting off the booting?), but fan, etc still on w/o power interruption. The system goes to the screen where it asks you in which mode to reboot, and neither safe mode, or any other mode (normal, last time computer booted OK, etc) results in the same situation. Can anyone be of any help? Sorta stuck in a loop here.

Friday the 13th huh? Scary..

What were the last changes made to Windows that you can recall prior to this happening? (You may want to try the XP disk and use the "repair" function)
