Sounds like your still experiencing problems with the trojan if you want to remove it dig around the security and malware removal forums, if you simply want to delete the OS and start fresh the best way to get around the problem of version you have is newer then the disk is to reformat the hard drive and then install windows although it sounds like you just have an upgrade disk to windows, am I correct?

What do you mean when you say stand alone version of xp home? you mean its a full install disc for xp home? A stand alone system implies it is a system that does not have an internet connection. It deffinetly sounds like you have a virus or some form of malware or something on your computer that is limiting your actions. And is your E: drive a CD/DVD drive or a second HDD? If you are infected I would not recommend transfering files around as you do not know what you will be transfering.

If you have a full install disc of xp (and before doing this make sure it is infact a full install disc as it wont work with the upgrade disc) you could always just format your hard drive and start with a fresh install not sure if that was what you tried to do before when it told you that you have a newer version installed?

the problem is that without access to the hard drive, cut/copy paste etc i stand to lose loads of files so need to get some sort of access before i can format the disc. i've posted on the malware forum so hope to get some help that way but any solution you guys can come up with would be a great help

Like I said boot into a live version of linux like Knoppix and access the disk from there then you can copy the disc over to the other drive and everything should be fine, or you could run a program like drive image xml and make an image of the disk although not sure how well that would work in your case I would use drive image xml as a last resort.

Do you know if the disk is still formatted as NTFS or did it change to a RAW format?
