Windows XP crashes during installation of Adobe Reader 9
Earlier today I was trying to open a PDF document that wouldn't open (I believe I was on Reader 7...), so I go to the Adobe website to download/install Adobe Reader 9. I get to the point where the computer needs to restart to complete the operation...upon restart I get the "Blue Screen of Death" after about a second of Windows XP trying to load.

I've uploaded a screen capture of the error here:

Problem now is that I can't seem to get past that screen, not even in safe mode -- the same screen will pop up and the computer will reset whenever Windows is trying to load.

Any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: This is the final screen that appears before the Blue Screen of death when trying to start up in safe mode:

Apro pos that second screenshot, how long did you leave it before deciding that process was going no further?

Hi I had no choice regarding the second screen shot...I'd be taken to the BSOD within a few seconds of the second screenshot beign displayed. In other words, I didn't hit Esc or any other key -- the computer would go to the Blue Screen within a second or two of the second screen being displayed (which makes me think that the CPU cannot load the SPTD.sys file?)

I am indebted to BleepingComputer.com who report that this .driver relates only to CD ROMs so maybe unplugging those for experimental purposes would be worth a shot.
