Stop 7B Blue Screen of Death
I got infected with a browser highjacker. (and who knows what else) I ran chkdisc -- was OK. Decided to restore to a week earlier. Seemed to be Ok. But ---- when I started up I a 7B blue screen flashed on and immed turned machine off (don't even have time to read the rest of the codes or anything else on the page).

Hi Lee
There are some Microsoft KB articles which talks about the same error code

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316401
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480/ru
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

If You face the same problem again please reply but with the name of the operating system and service pack installed

If you tap the Function 8 key while starting up, you can select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" from the extended Safe Mode menu and that will make the blue screen stay still long enough to read the whole Stop Error Message.

System Restore is never a good way of dealing with a malware attack and Checkdisk isn't really the right tool either. Did you run any Malware trackers?

Saga Lout,
Thanks!!!
Message is:
STOP: 0x000007b (0xF7BD2528, 0xCooooo34, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

It also tells me to:
1) Check for viruses --- I don't know how w/o Windows running
2) Remove new hard drives or controllers ---- There aren't any
3) Check hard drive for properly config. and terminated --- How???
4) run CHKDSK/F --- How do I get to DOS???
5) then restart computer

I didn't even know there was such a thing as Malware Trackers. How do I use one when I can't download it on broken machine. Any recommendations as to which one is best.
BTW this machine is on ad-hoc net with broken one.

Himanshu,

Sorry I didn't say I was running XP Home w/ SP2. I can't upgrade to SP3 because I run only on battery. Paid once to have DC jack replaced and didn't want to pay when it went again. (First thing SP3 says when you try to install is get off battery and plug in.)

In those circumstances, so long as you had all the MS Security Updates to your SP2 system and continue to get new ones when this is all fixed, SP3 isn't too important. It always seems silly that you can install a brand new version of XP without a power cable plugged in but SP3 - oh no!

If you have an XP CD, you're going to need it to boot the computer and go for the Repair option so it's R for Repair and not Enter to install. Here's where if you have a God you pray no-one entered an Administrator Password because if they did and you don't know it, you're screwed. If you get to the Command Prompt, type fixmbr and hit Enter. Accept the warning and when that completes, type fixboot and hit Enter again. One more warning and when it finishes, type Exit and you'll restart. Don't hit the key to boot from CD this time and see if the original system can "see" and mount the hard disk properly.

Saga Lout,
I received my XP CD from HP. Was able to boot from it and enter the Repair/Restore Console. fixmbr and fixboot worked just as you described. When I attempted to boot from the system I came back to the same Stop 7B. Stop still just gives hex codes - none of messages detailing the prob. in English.
I see some notes which talk about Explorer v's later than 6 needing to be deleted. I have/had 8 installed. Seems unlikely this could be the prob.?
