XP reporting wrong free space on HDD
Hello,

I have this weird problem on my dell lappy. Everytime i reboot, HDD free space goes to some 46-49MB no matter how many movies and files i delete before reboot. First i ran chkdsk and later defragmented but still the problem wont go away. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

In Control Panel>Folder options, go to the Tools menu then View and scroll down to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and tick that entry. Further down, untick "Hide all Protected System Folders", accept the warning and click Apply and OK. Have a hunt around in Windows Explorer (My Computer), particularly in Documents and Settings, right clicking folders to see the Properties and therefore the size of the folder. Sometimes, a mouse hover is all it takes to read what you need to know. In case you're infected with malware, do you see any other strange behaviour in the system?

I'm afraid the problem is with the hardware. Just before this problem arose, i tried partitioning the 100gb drive using PowerQuest Partition Magic 8 and the process failed in the middle leaving xp unbootable. I had to use recovery console to restore OS. Also i have scanned with all kinds of anti malware applications and there seems to be no infection. Could u suggest me some kind of disk management tool that can help fix this problem?

I suppose the Recovery Console would still allow you to try fixmbr and fixboot, if you can still boot from your XP CD.

You could use that CD to look around for larger than normal file sizes. Start by checking for different Partition letters by using the dir command - dir d:\ Enter, etc.

ok i will try that. Before this problem arose, i used to hibernate the lappy instead of shutting it down after every use

PowerQuest Partition Magic 8 only supports HDD's up to 80GB whereas
Norton Partition Magic 8 supports HDD's up to 300GB.

Have a look here http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm//spacemonger.html and download Spacemonger, which will give you more accurate folder properties than Microsoft can.
