OK, thanx a lot for your patience NEON, I followed all the latest you sent, secunia is scaned the lot & only found realtek & renewed my skype too.

Now do I go elsewhere to the other expert helpers or is it here at desktop properties ?

I think I sent you all you asked for so far.

You're welcome If anybody has any ideas they'll respond here. There's no need to create a new topic.

@Phantom It's certainly something I've never seen before.

For anyone seeing this for the first time:

The problem is that the Display Properties dialog is popping up on reboot.

The computer had some malware and that was removed. I do not believe it was the cause of this problem. (Adware.SmartShopper)

There was a Desktop Component that I had removed thinking it had something to do with it:

Quote:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\0]
FriendlyName =
Source = file:///C:/DOCUME~1/y/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image002.jpg
SubscribedURL = file:///C:/DOCUME~1/y/LOCALS~1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image002.jpg
The problem reappeared after removing that key though.

I also noticed that the computer had a couple Virtual Machine drivers running. Those should only be running on Virtual Machines so naturally I believed the system I was dealing with was a Virtual Machine. I was wrong though, this machine is actually a host to virtual machines. Uninstalling the VirtualBox Guest Additions (which should not be installed on a host machine), thinking that was the cause, didn't fix the problem either.

I now believe the problem was caused by using GUI modifying programs such as Theme XP and Longhorn Transformer. I do not know how to fix it if that was the cause though.

For the Display Properties to open like that at Startup, the following command must be triggered somehow:

Display Properties (Settings):

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,3

But how???

Tweak UI might have also been the culprit. If it's a setting that was changed in the program, I don't know enough about it to change the settings back to their defaults.

Please uninstall the program and let me know if that solves it.

thanx both,

two versions of twikuis are uninstalled now, but still the same plus this login turned up 3 tries of log OFF/ON, which before used to come up very very infriquently & not always on bootup.

Lo & Behold, just tried my VB with Linux & win7 without the G.Additions & mouse is free to move about!!!. Before I had to press a key to do it. I certainly have the Jinks somewhere, need a holiday!!! ....nick

That login dialog has to do with the Gmail Notifier which you have installed here:

I still believe your NVIDIA driver could be the culprit since it's related to your Display Properties (RUNDLL.EXE). I would uninstall the driver to test the theory. The NIVIDIA Control Panel does appear in your Display Properties. And, your Display Properties seem to always open on the Settings tab (with NVIDIA).

For the writings, you'll need to reinstall a video driver.
