Solved: flaky xp update
I have a security update listed on the MS update site as follows: KB923789 which is a security update for the flash player. I have tried unsuccessfully to install (it downloads o.k.) but it will NOT install. Failed!! is all I get. So I went to the site and downloaded it manually to my system and loaded it onto a usb jump drive. I took it to my computer that needs this update and when I tried to open the file and install it, the msg comes up something like - "different flash drive installed than this download is for" or some such words. Sooooooooo I guess my only option at this point is to ignore its presence on the list of updates and not worry about it. I noticed that my primary pc does not show this as a downloaded update in the list of security updates already installed. Sorry for the ramble - thanks in advance.

KB923789 is dated May 2008 and is a very old update.

Download and install Adobe Flash Player 10.0.32.18 with the link that Mumbodog provided.

Thanks for quick response.I did as suggested but it still says same msg. I did a google on the update and it appears that more than a few people have had the same problem and receive the same msg when trying to install. I installed sp3 Jan 09 - maybe it is incorporated in that service pack and is why it doesn't show up in my add/remove programs list of security updates. It still doesn't explain, however, why this msg appears on installation of update. Also, can you tell me where in my system you locate the adobe flash part number details. I have looked in windows file and in programs file and don't see it. It is listed as adobe flash player plugin 10 in add/remove program details. I guess that is it - Anyway, working on the assumption that my system is secure - hope it's a safe assumption. Thanks again.

Another thing to try is using Adobe's flash uninstaller tool using the link in this post, then reinstall flash player using the other link I posted earlier.

Sometimes this gets things cleaned up in the registry.

I have the flash player working and according to MS newsgroups, with this new adobe update, that particular security update for it is no longer needed. So I guess all is o.k. and I will mark this thread solved. Thanks again.-
