Unhappy Dell Inspiron Laptop, Network Connections folder empty
Hey guys and gals,

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, aging rapidly, and is running on Windows XP. Not too long ago I was defragmenting the hard drive when I stepped away and the laptop overheated, and shut off. Ever since then, when I start up the laptop, it brings me just to my desktop image, no taskbar or icons, and then goes through the "shutting down" process without me touching a key.

Well, I re-installed Windows and now it starts up just fine, however, I am unable to connect to the Internet via my wireless adapter. When I open the Network Connections folder, it is completely empty. There's just nothing there. I know there's probably just a box I didn't click or something I didn't set up, but I'm at a complete loss of what to do. Any ideas?

Thank you for reading.

sounds like you don't have the driver for your adaptor installed, identify the adaptor, go to the makers site, locate the driver and install and that should solve your problem

A reinstall of XP doesn't usually install all the drivers for a computer's devices(display adapter, sound device, network adapters - wired and wireless, chipset, etc.). That's why you need to know the identity of those devices and have the current XP drivers downloaded and saved and burned off to a CD-R. You can then install the drivers that didn't get installed.

What's the "service tag number" of that Dell Inspiron? It's be on a sticker on the computer case.
