Solved: SM Bus Controller ?
Hi, I have a custom computer that my husband and I built. I have an EVGA nForce 780i SLI Motherboard. In the device manager, there is a yellow question mark for the SM Bus Controller. Everywhere I read, you have to reinstall the chip-set drivers. The last time I did that, I had to also format the hard drive and reinstall windows xp as well. I don't want to do that again. I have lots of programs that I use daily, and don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure all my programs to my preferences. My computer runs fine otherwise.

Is there anything I can do to get it working without having to format and reinstall my OS and all my programs?

If the PC works fine, ignore that entry. Solved.

Something must have gone seriously wrong when you last installed the chipset drivers. Can you give us a bit of a background story?

Besides advising to reinstall the chipset drivers, there's not much else we can say. But yeah, like Mumbodog says, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Well a few months ago I had to reinstall windows XP due to an error that the windows repair didn't solve. But as Mumbodog said, I won't worry about it since my pc runs fine. In the future, in an event that I do need to reinstall, I'll reinstall the chip-set at that point. Thanks to the both of you for your help.

FYI, after a clean install the chipset driver should be installed first, before any other drivers. Reboot the PC after each is installed.

Network
