Boot from the XP CD and then quickly press any key when the Press any key to boot from CD command appears.

When the blue setup screen appears, read the screen carefully. It'll tell you which key to press in order to perform a certain function. You want to perform these functions:

Delete all current partitions.

Create a new C partition.

Format that new C partition in the NTFS file system(Note: Don't select the quick option).

Install XP.

The entire process will involve 2 restarts. Do not(!) press any key when the above command appears during each restart. The command will disappear in a few seconds.

After you're done, you can remove the XP CD. When the 30-day activation pop-up appears, go on-line and activate XP. You don't need to register it.

Here is a guide with screenshots of what you should see in the various steps. If this is not your version you can navigate to it and chose the right one. If you follow the instructions that flavallee gives in post 2 and look at these screenshots , you shouldn`t have any trouble. Let us know if you do with any error messages you get, or problems with the various steps.

Yes, it`s possible that for some reason the partition didnt get flagged as an active or boot partition, i have had that problem before and wound up using a third party partitioning tool. You could try that, or put the drive in another machine as a slave, format it and be sure to set it as active. There are a number of good partitioning tools available, i use Gparted which works well and it`s freeware.

You could also use Puppy Linux, which has Gparted already built in and it`s a great little OS and recovery tool.

These are live cd`s, download the .iso file and you can use Nero or similar to burn it as a disc image.
