Disappearing freespace
Th free space on my HD has today started to disappear. I have deleted files, but the free space continues to drop. I have checked with Avast Anti virus , SpyBot ,MalWare, and all come up negative. Checked with CCleaner and also did a search for any large unknown files. But I cannot find where the free space has, and is going. As a test my freespace being down to 170MB, I deleted files to value of 700MB.This meant I had freespace of 870MB. In the following 2 hours I made no operation on the computer, except to check freespace. The freespace went down to 60MB. Checking on my virus programs, no virus was detected. I am submitting a highjackthis. log. Please help.

Your HijackThis log isn't posted correctly and is too difficult to read.

Open Notepad and then see if Format - Word Wrap is checked or unchecked.

If it's checked, uncheck it.

If it's unchecked, check it.

Close Notepad, then run a new HijackThis scan, then save that new log, then post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

In MY COMPUTER, right-click the C drive icon and then click Properties.

What's listed for the hard drive size, the amount of free space, and the amount of used space?

Does the hard drive have a single C partition or multiple partitions?

On newer computers, there will usually be a D partition that contains the recovery files.

C:\9GB contained Windows and associated programs.
Total HD 160GB.150GB distributed amongst D:\. E:\ and F:\.
Since posting I cleared all programs from C:\ leaving Windows 2.5GB and 6.5 freespace.During the night the freespace has fallen to 2GB and is still falling.I have checked the disk surface and there is no problem.

Hi

Try downloading this little app DirLot. Download the 0.9.3-adam version.

Put it at the Root of C: and run it then report back which folder/file is the biggest including the size (change the units to MB). That may help work out where your space is going.

Your hard drive is 160 GB in size and is divided into 4 partitions?

Disappearing freespace >
C:\ 9GB containing OS. D:\ Aprox, 45GB Programs. E:\ Aprox. 45.GB Programs. F:\Aprox.60GM downloaded music and movies. The idea behind this division was to make it quicker to defragment an individual partition rather the the whole HD. Now the whole of my query was to find out where my disappeared freespace went from C:\. It now seems to have stabilised at 450MB, but I have 1000MB unaccounted for.I have checked all the folders on this partition. As to your enquiry, can I gain anything by repartitioning?

You would probably be looking at least 2GB for your page file, right there.

I would follow BLT's advice, though. Just tried that DirLot (http://soft.km.ua/soft/dirlot/download.en.html), and yeah, once you download and install it, it gives you a breakdown of where your drive space is actually going.

Disappearing freespace
Thank you for your reply. I had already carried out the recommendation and downloaded and used WinDirStat .It is a useful program, but I did not find any missing file,or any old file with increase of 700GB+. By transferring a folder from C:\ I have increased the freespace to 1.34GB. Now by waiting, it will be seen if it gradually disappears. I cannot find any PageFile.sys.

I'm a little concerned about these entries. A lot of nasties go with RIPE. Do you recognize them as being from your ISP?
