Computer frozen and gone extremely slow during Windows XP SP3 update
Ok, so, I decided to actually run windows updates for once, and I did, it said it was upgrading to windows XP SP3. But then after a while it became extremely slow and I couldn't run anything in the background, the bar was half way through so I left the computer on over night, to find in the morning that the updates were still not finished and the bar was still halfway. The updates were still happening though as different file names like "installing blahblah.dll" were coming up every 10 or so seconds. It's been updating for about 12 hours now and the computers basically frozen and is so slow I can't do anything. I don't want to shut down my computer as I know that's a bad thing to do during windows service pack updates, but what else can I do? This SP update has been going on all night and the bar hasn't moved at all. Should I just shut down/restart the computer and let it restore on startup? It did say at the beginning of the updates that it was backing up my files, and if it didn't I could do system restore. OR, should I just leave my computer on untill it finishes ? (if it ever will)

Any advise or help would be appreciated.

I just did an update to sp3 and it took about 40 minutes to load on an old laptop. What internet service do you have? mine is DSL and fairly fast.

Mine's wireless. With Virgin Media. It isn't too slow. If I could cancel the updates I would. But it's already backup and archived my old files and it's installing the new ones. It's been doing that for over 12 hours now. So i'm just wondering wether I should leave it on untill the updates finish which may take weeks for all I know, or shut down and restart my computer and have to go through the long restoring process. :/

As long as it's still giving different file names, I'd recommend leaving it alone.

You could cancel it. Your windows will just go back to SP2 and delete all the changes that were made with the installation of SP3.

The cancel button was put there for a reason i suppose.

Btw SP3 is pretty much unnecessary. Stick with SP2.
