Slow running computer

Were to begin,
well I finally upgraded to Windows XP thinking that would slove some problems, but I think it added more.
I am operating with Windows XP Home Edition and using dial-up, which I know I am still in the ice ages, but for some reason I can't get high speed where I live.
The computer is running slower than ever several times a day I will get a message saying I am not connected to the internet (which I am).
The processes running are numerous.
I do have HiJack this but don't know how to use it. But I will post it here if need be.
I would be greatful for any help offered.

How much RAM do you have?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

I have 64.0 MB of Ram, But thats another problem I added extra memory and the computer is not reading it. Here also is the Hijackthis log.

You need to download the HijackThis installer from my link. Yours is really outdated.

Unfortunately, RAM is your main problem. Until you figure out how to install it, your computer is going to be running like a snail.

You need to download the current version(2.0.2) of HijackThis, as advised, then post a new log here. Make sure to close all open windows first before you run a scan and post a log here.

There is no way that you can run Windows XP in a computer with only 64 MB of RAM. Besides having serious lag time, it's going to bog down and freeze up on you.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

What's the processor type and speed?

How large is the hard drive?

The Compaq Presario 5BW220 desktop supports a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. It uses 168-pin, 3.3V, PC-100 modules. You can buy 256 MB modules at the MEMORYX site for $19.98 apiece. A matched pair will cost you $39.96 plus shipping. You should seriously consider maxing out the RAM if you want that dinosaur to run halfway decently with XP. I've used that site for about 2 years, so I can attest to its reliability.

A 11.2 GB hard drive isn't going to go far, especially if you try installing space-hungry programs in it.
