Question Solved: question about transfering files from one account on xp pro to another accoun
I have 2 accounts on my computer. One account is administrator and the other is limited. I started downloading files on one account, but I realized that I had downloaded them to the wrong account. I tried copying them to another device and onto the account that needed those files, but when they where on the other account they wouldn't work or open. I'm not sure why this would be. I did recently go to the trouble to follow an internet xp hardening guide due to getting infected by adware/viruse and spyware and needing to reformat my computer 3 time in the last three months. I suspect it might be one of my hardening settings that is preventing files from one folder from working on anything else. But I'm not sure. If it helps the files from the first account have green lettering while the file of the second account are black for some reason.

Any ideas?

Welcome to TSG!

Which account are you moving them too? If you are moving them to the administrative account, you can just take ownership of the files:
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

If you are moving them to the limited account, you'll need to grant that account access rights.
Right click the file, click Properties.
Click the Security tab
Click Add...
Type the Limited Account name, then click Check Names
Click OK
Click the Full Control box
Click OK

If you don't see the Security tab, you'll need to turn off Simple File Sharing.
Control Panel | Folder Options (In Appearance and Themes if using Category View)
Click the View tab
last item in the list, uncheck Use simple file sharing (Recommended)

Opps, didn't see the part about the green color. That means the files are encrypted. You may have to decrypt them first (if they change from green to black when moved, the system already decrypted them.
Right click the file, click Properties
Click the Advanced button
Uncheck Encrypt contents to secure data

If you are using XPs EFS (Encrypted File System), make sure you export your private key to a flash drive, floppy, another system, or email it to yourself and keep it stored on a web based mail server.
If you ever have to re-install windows, it will be the only way to recover the encrypted files.
Search Help and Support for Encrypting files and for export a certificate with the private key for more info.
