Solved: explorer.exe is hogging cpu
my hard drive is running constantly with a lot of fan noise and both task manager
and system explorer show that my cpu usage is about 50% consumed by the
explorer.exe process when all applications are closed. any ideas ?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

First try disabling Symantec. It's a system resource hog.

Next, if no luck, try the following:

Click on Start > Run > type (or paste): regsvr32 -u shmedia.dll

Then, click on Start > Run > type regedit

Locate the following registry key and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850D C73E}\InProcServer32

Reboot.

Make sure you backup the registry before deleting the registry key.
