Angry Constantly running CPU - svchost.exe netsvcs
i'm really struggling to get to the bottom of my suddenly slower Sony Vaio notebook computer running XP. i've run virus scans, spyware scans, etc. and nothing comes up. when i google looking for problems, i get links to nothing that helps (including 5 year old forum postings about a similar problem).

using the Process Explorer, i've determined that it's the netsvcs portion of svchost that is constantly fluctuating (and it's kernel.dll portions) between 5% and 35% no matter what i'm doing with the computer. turning off Windows Automatic Updates has made no difference. the only thing that works is using the process explorer to kill the netsvcs process - but that's killing the symptom, not fixing the problem.

why is netsvcs constantly running? HOW DO I GET IT TO STOP USING SO MUCH OF MY CPU SO THAT THE COMPUTER WILL JUST RUN NORMALLY???

i can post more info if you tell me what else you need. thanks for all your help!

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

I would suspect Norton. Have you tried disabling it?

Norton
i figured it was Norton, too... and over the last few weeks, i've tried several different things. i even upgraded Norton to Internet Security 2010 from the '06 version that was on there. that (according to the install) completely removed the old version before installing the new one... and no help. this morning, i tried right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling the 2 things it offers to disable (anti-virus and firewall), but that made no difference either. is there a more thorough way to "disable" to see if it's the problem? is a complete uninstall/re-install of Norton a viable option or am i barking up the wrong tree with that?

thanks again...

You could try removing it completely with the Norton Removal Tool. This would the most thorough way to test it.

Well, I removed Norton... it didn't seem to help the computer. Then did a re-install and it's still the same. Here's my most current HJT Log. Thanks for reading... hopefully someone will see something to fix!

Post I can help.
I can help you if you are having problems still, just don't install anything or add new hardware, and don't try to fix anything else until we know, we can replicate your environment and I'm bored and laid-off
