My computer keeps crashing and I don't know why
Hello again.

At the beginning of the month, after Christmas and New Year, I've got a new computer up and running after my old one suddenly crashed and wouldn't start up again.

But, I've already got a problem with new one. Actually, two problems.

Problem one: When I first switch on my PC, (first thing in the day), it tries to boot up using the CD/DVD. I get "BOOT DISC FAILURE. PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISC AND PRESS ENTER." However, when I restart my computer, it boots up without the system disc. Does anyone know how to sort this out?

Problem two: Then I installed Beijing 2008 on my PC. The game locked up and crashed my computer the first time and frequently when I tried to play it. I have now uninstalled this game, but my computer still crashes and I can't work out why. I've manually removed the folder for the game in Program Files and checked the registry and it seems the game has uninstalled.

It tends to crash whilst I'm running a video convertion programme and this is very frustrating because I have to convert the video all over again.

On one occasion, my computer crashed after just booting up and I hadn't even done anything.

I have done a virus scan, disc clean-up and error checks, which find no problems, but it still crashes and I'm getting a bit upset because I can't solve this problem.

Can anyone help? I'm running on Windows XP.

Hello.
1. Desktop or Lappy? Which brand, model & model # computer if OEM? If not OEM:
a. did you build it; b. which brand, model & model # motherboard?

Go into the BIOS & set the boot order to that the BIOS looks at the HDD before the optical drive.

2. Did your computer lock & crash before you tried to install the Be. ... game?
What are the RECOMMENDED computer specifications for the game? What are your computer's specifications?

Does the computer crash & lock when in safe mode?

Which XP? Which service pack?

Rainforest123, to answer your questions and I got this info from running dxdiag:

1. Desktop. AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor 2.9GHz.
a) My dad built it for me. Motherboard model no is GA-MA785GMT-UD2H.

I've tried setting all three of the boot order in the BIOS to HDD, no different. I guess this will just have to stay like this.

2. As far as I know, no. My computer did not crash before I installed the game. Recommended specifications for the game: Microsoft Windows XP/Vista, AMD or Intel Dual Core processor, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 graphics card or ATI equivalent, Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. My computer specifications: I've got Windows XP, AMD Dual Core processor as above, ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card, I do not have an Xbox 360 so have no controller. Maybe my graphics card is not good enough, although my computer will install and run the game.

I haven't tried safe mode yet. I am aware of safe mode and thought about it. Might try this if it crashes again.

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 and everything's up-to-date.

Any help to you?

My computer doesn't crash provided I don't do any video converting. I can watch DVD's, watch and record TV, play games and surf the internet but I've discovered I've got another problem, though. Maybe, this should be in the Internet and Networking section, but this is still a problem.

When I go to get Microsoft Update, it doesn't work.

I click on 'Start now' and then 'continue'. But then it keeps trying to recover the tab and then I get:

"We were unable to return you to Microsoft.com.

Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the the website continues to have a problem.

What you can do:

Go to your home page;
Try to return to Microsoft.com."

If I try to return it still doesn't work.

Also, I've done a scan with Registry Booster recommended on this website and it's come up with load of errors. I don't know what to do!!!

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Don't touch that crapware even with a ten foot pole! Software that messes with the registry will only cripple programs and Windows itself.

For the boot error you're getting (boot disc failure), do you happen to have a flash drive in one of the USB ports, if so, remove it and try booting.

You could re-set the BIOS to load defaults. You might want to ask your dad for assistance re-configuring the BIOS.

What is the current boot order in the BIOS?

Your motherboard's product information page.
http://www.gigabyte.us/Support/Mothe...ProductID=3286

If that fails, you could clear the CMOS. See page 33 of the manual, or search the manual for: clear cmos .

I agree with Phantom010 about Registry Booster.

Regarding the internet issue, I suggest that you solve the issues in this thread; THEN create a new thread for the other issue. OTHERWISE, you are going to receive advice from various experts; the advice might conflict with advice given here.

I can't copy and paste my Hijack file. It won't let me. Do I need to change the file to another format?

I'm not sure what the problem is but if you can't copy and paste, simply attach the log to your next post.

Can you post a few of your latest minidump files? They are located in C:\WINDOWS\Minidump. ZIP them and attach them to your next post.

Here are my minidump files.

I've got two. The one with the most files is on my C: Drive and the one with the single file is on my D: Drive. I think my operating system is installed on the C: Drive.

I was wondering whether it's worth uninstalling my other video converting programs I've got installed (as some of these have been crashing as well) and seeing whether it helps to stop my ION VHS to PC converter locking up my PC.
