wireless connection but no internet
Hi, I have an old Dell Inspiron 5000 that is about 10 years old with XP. I bought a wireless card for it (encore 54 mbps wireless pc card). I cannot get on the internet at home even though it says my signal strength is excellent. I don't know if I have messed up the configuration for the connection or where I should start. I have another laptop (Lenovo t61) that connects just fine. I have a Linksys router, but the information for that is not at my fingertips at this time. I have been able to get online at work with this computer but not at home. I am simply wanting this to be something for my 3 year old daughter to work on with my wife. I'm not really computer savvy so pardon my ignorance.

rkrs,
you may need to log into the router and Enable the wireless part of it???
can you post the exact make and model of the router for us
if you did not change the password it will be fairly easy to get in and enable the wireless feature.
It is not enabled by default in my Linksys router... a WRT54G...
google it and you will find the default info on how to get into it.

Click the icon that says excellent strength and then go to View Wireless networks. Highlight yours and click to connect then it will require you to enter the security key. If you can't remember that, you're back to Speed_hog's suggestion about interfacing with the router through IE. For that, of course, you need a cable so first, use that to see if you can connect to the Net when wired.

Hi, I have the same type of wireless router...wrt54g. My other laptop is connected through the wireless router and works fine. Does that mean that I still have to log in? I'll try hooking it up to the cable. Thanks!
