Ritugoel, Try installing again and this time DELETE all partitions (except restore-recovery partition) FIRST, then choose the install option and do a full format using NTFS file system, not a quick one and see if that helps.

Are you formatting or installing? Formatting is not needed outside of setup any more. Just install the OS.

Chaces are that you have a SATA drive which XP does not natively support. Was the drive seen by XP setup at all?

If not:

Installing XP on a SATA drive
Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy
Resolving "Setup did not find any hard disk drives" during Windows XP Installation

"Many newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the BIOS and check the 'Sata Operation' setting, change it to 'Raid Autodetect/ATA' if it is not already. Now try to install XP (Verbiage will vary by manufacturer)" - Courtesy of simpswr.

BIOS settings to try:

A re you installing Vista or XP?

Do you have the full installation disk or one from Compaq?

If you are installing XP and don't have a floppy, you will need to make a new XP CD according to the directions in the links above.

Have you done a Google search to see if your laptop manufacturer even supports Vista with all the drivers you may need?

Do you have a Vista Install disc?
XP seems to have lot less issues than Vista... are you sure you want to go that route?
Vista requires Twice as many resources as XP does... that means it runs twice as slow as XP...

when you start a thread like this it helps us help you better if you put the model number here too.

Elvandil -
Maybe I've found what my pc needs right here - have been searching the threads for something about "Primary Drive 0 not found"
My Dell 4600C's XP op sys was eaten by a virus before Christmas and the local shop wanted more than I have to reload XP, the backed up data and get me going again. I found instructions on getting rid of all existing partitions before reinstalling XP, and have come down to the end of the installation and stuck with the error msg above.
I've read through J Barnett's instructions to load Windows onto a SATA drive at one of the links provided; I will go back through the installation and stop at the prompt to press F6 and install SCSI or RAID drivers. I'm not completely clear on how to find the drivers on the cd's I have - I guess if nothing else I can google SATA drivers and the file names listed, and put them on a cd. Have no floppy in this 4600C. Wish me luck!
Thanks,
Leslie

ps - after a little more reading thought I would add this info: this is not a hard drive I've added to the pc - it's the one it came with. Should I just call it a Dell 4600C SATA drive? I'm not sure how (or if I can) get to specs on what SATA drive I have - to get the right drivers. Any glaring flaws in my logic? Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

If you're talking about one of those online scanners, probably better to avoid them. Are you missing any drivers now? If so, which ones? Have you checked the manufacturer's site?

If you have all your drivers now and everything is working, then it's better to leave it alone.
