If you are an admin, and the other is not the built-in machine account (which you can't delete), you can go to User Accounts in Control Panel and remove the other account.

I don't understand the question. Are you logging on to the account named administrator, or did you create a new account with administrator privileges? And this there another account whith the old users name?

If there is an account with the previous users name, just delete it. And you can also delete his documents and settings folder.

If the previous user used the administrator account (the one named administrator), you need to manually delete files.

If I got a used laptop I'd want to to do a fresh install of the os and all my apps. Especially if I got it from someone I don't know. You have no idea of how it has been maintained or what maybe on it.

If you got an XP installation CD boot with that, format the drive, and install.

If you got Recovery disks or the hard drive has a Recovery partition then "recover" back to the way the computer was when new. If it has the Recovery option you'll be able to find information about how to use it on HP's web site.

If you got none of the above you can see what HP offers and what it would cost.

In My Computer right click on the C: drive - Properties - Tools tab - Check Now ... - select both 'Check disk options' - Start. It will tell you that it cannot check the disk now; click on 'Yes' and restart your computer.

This will check the hard drive, and may fix any errors there.

Do you have an XP installation CD or the ability to "Recover"?

If it's really about 10 years old I doubt that it's worth pouring more than a few extra dollars into it. But, we don't know enough about it's specs or what shape it's in to advise on that.

For the account you want to delete, go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts and click on the account name you want to delete. Click 'Delete the account'. You will be prompted if you want to save the users files, click No.

[Edit: removed because it's the same thing TerryNet suggested one minute ago]

Next, McAfee may not install or run if the computer has malware. You can download and run the free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

You can't do much anything with the Guest account. If you are not going to reinstall Windows create a new User account, with administrative privileges, for yourself. After you login to that one you can delete the one you are now using.

Those specs don't sound like a 10 yr. old machine. What is the HP Pavilion model number?

"Intel Pentium" is describing the "guts" of the machine, including the Central Processor Unit (CPU).

"Harmon Kardon" I found by searching makes audio systems, so maybe that is referring to the sound card.

My HP Pavilion dv6500z is identified as "dv6000" just above the top right of the screen. A very useful tool, since you have somewhat of a mystery machine, is System Information for Windows. Download that, you don't even have to install anything, and run it whenever you want to know something about your computer. In the System Summary section the third line is Product Name; for me that says "HP Pavilion dv6500 Notebook PC."

A default is whatever the manufacturer or software developer thinks is a good value for anybody to start with. Not knowing what defaults you are talking about I cannot guess whether you want to do that.

Sounds like a magazine to me. But you are probably referring to Update Sequence Number Journal.

After doing the disk check are you still getting those disk warnings:
