Solved: Post Reformat trouble
Thanks ahead of time for your help. I recently reformatted my desktop with Win 98 and then subsequently upgraded to XP Home. I had also done the same thing a couple of years ago and had teriffic success, but this time, not so much! The C drive shows 75 GB with 22 used and 53 free. The processor is a Pentium(R) 4 CPU, 1700 Mhz,1.69Ghz and 640 MB of RAM.
There are 3 Main problems:
1. Very very Slow with the hourglass tormenting me.
2. Many programs get hung, some all the time like Msft Word, it will not close and always ends up with the "not responding" mssg
3. Occasional static noise coming through speakers.

This does not appear to be a malware problem. You should consider adding more RAM. Where did the McAfee come from?

Hi Cyberkittytech person!! The McAfee came from my Comcast ISP and one thing I failed to mention was that this CPU originally came with Msft Me, but when it came time to reformat, I was advised to use Win 98 (more stable) and then upgrade to XP Home addition. Once again, on my first reformat, everything worked perfectly, on the second reformat, very slow?? The only difference on software was the addition of Msft Business Outlook 2007, could this be why my Office 2000 Pro keeps getting hung? Perhaps I should just get XP total install instead of upgrade?

Depending on how you did the "upgrade" install. You do not need to install W98 to upgrade from it just produce the media. With that in mind you may find your answer to why it's slow this time. Microsoft's 2007 applications require a great deal of ram and your 640, in my opinion, is not meeting that requirement.

I would like to see one scan of your computer.

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items, Uninstall List and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

I see you reported to have your thread moved to the XP forum. I'll do that for you but if you complete the scan I requested it will be viewable to all.

Moving thread.

bkillian62:

I received your private message and have read your thread.

Can you advise what the brand name, model name, and model number of that desktop is? If it happens to be a Dell brand, advise what the service tag number is. I'd like to know how much RAM it supports.

There was no need to install 98 first and then upgrade to XP. You went through the unnecessary hassle of using a startup floppy disk and DOS commands. The upgrade XP CD would've done all the work - formatting the hard drive and doing a fresh install of XP. You would've inserted the 98 CD when prompted to, then would've reinserted the XP CD to complete the install of XP. Also by upgrading from 98 to XP, you carried 98 debris into the XP upgrade.

I've resurrected and upgraded several older desktops from 98 or ME to XP, so I'm familiar with the process and the pitfalls that need to be dealt with.

Besides Office 2007 and McAfee VirusScan, which are both system-hungry, you have unnecessary programs(IObit Advanced System Care and Windows Desktop Search) that are dragging down that old desktop.

Just because Comcast is your Internet Service Provider(ISP), there's no need to install all the crap it offers.

Nothing alarming in that OTS file. Odd dates you can perhaps explain...10/29/2029.

Other than that I would go with more ram.

Have you determined how much RAM that computer supports and what type RAM modules it uses?

Yes I have; The Max memory is 2048 MB and the type is RDRAM which I just learned is no longer manufactured, but can be purchased. I found 1GB for $109.99 plus tax & s/h and 2 GB for $199.99 ++ The 4 sticks that I currently have are 64 MB, 64, 256, and 256 for the total of 640 MB.. So if I bought the 1 GB, I would have a total of 1 1/2 GB or I could just buy the 2 GB? Adding to the investment decision is the fact that I also own a Sony laptop with a 142 GB hard drive and 2038 MB RAM which I could use for my home business and put the MSFT Outlook 2007 on that and possibly use the saved money to invest in a new machine in the future? Then reformat the desktop again with just the XP upgrade (your suggestion) and just use it for the internet and/or as a back up hard drive? I realize its my decision, but would greatly value your opinion

I'll just give my opinion on your situation. I would not invest that much money in a machine that old. I like your laptop idea and keeping the money for a new computer.
