Solved: limited account is unable to access the internet via wireless connection
WinXP SP3; A limited account is unable to access the internet via wireless connection unless an administrator account has logged on to the wireless network. Works Ok after administrator account has logged on and established link.

Our church wants to set up a computer in our library for visitors to use to access the internet. A hard wire connection to the router works with the Visitor Limited Account without the Administrator account being logged on. Running a hard wire CAT5 cable to the library isn’t an option. The computer’s wireless adapter is Belkin G Plus MIMO USB adapter. The DSL Modem/Router is a Siemens SE 567. Any Ideas?

Download the manual for your USB adapator.
If of course you do not already have it.
Look at Section 4.
Configure your wireless to be managed by Belkin and not by Windows IF you have installed the Belkin setup CD on your system.
Do you have the CD or do you know it is installed. If it is you will have a Belkin listing on your programs and when it is running most likely the Belkin symbol on your taskbar.
IF IT IS INSTALLED open network connections. Right click the wireless connection, click properties and if "Let Windows manage this connection" is checked, uncheck it and click apply and OK

Just been reading your first post again.
When you sign on as administrator (not after the guest has logged on) do you have to activiate the wirless link or is it loaded and running automatically.

I have my admin account ,the visitor limited account I set up and the Guest acct which is off in USER ACCOUNTS. I set Belkin to manage the wireless. When I log onto the admin acct Belkin acquires the network address and connects.

I’ve installed a Netgear PCI wireless PCI adapter, the limited account comes on line without the administrator being logged on. It is just temporary; I had to remove the bracket to install the PCI card. The computer is a Low Profile Dell Optiplex. Must be something I need to set in the Belkin properties.I thought I had a WINXP setting, I've contacted belkin support. Thanks for your reply

Sorry, you have lost me.
I thought you had the Belkin G+ usb adaptor and it was THAT wireless that the guest could not activate by simply booting the computer, without an administrator account signing on.
I did not see the Netgear PCi wireless card mentioned before.
What is the problem WITH the Belkin or the Netgear.

The problem is with the Belkin Wireless G USB adapter. I uninstalled the Belkin, Installed a Netgear PCI wireless G card. I had to remove the bracket hold down support to install the Netgear PCI card. With the netgear wireless PCI card installed; I don't have a problem logging on as a Limited Account from a boot. Problem is with the Belkin, some setting I don't know about. I have a inquiry to Belkin. Thanks for your concern.

Belkin gave me the run around. I've installed a D-link WDA-1320 with a Low Profile bracket. Problem solved. Limited account can now log onto wireless network without the administrator being logged on. Thanks to all for their inputs.

Solution for belkin wireless adapter administrator rights problem
I really like the Belkin hardware because it picks up signals very well but the software really sucks. I was having the exact same problem as the OP.

After many months of logging in to the admin account and back out just to bump the software to connect I decided I must figure out how to solve this.

What I ended up doing is a little bit inelegant but it works.

To give the Belkin software admin rights I used the “runas” command using credentials from a shortcut file that is placed in the all users startup folder. Bear with me… this is a little bit complicated

Firstly log in to an administrator account

find the startup folder for all users…

on windows xp this is located at

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

In that folder you need to create a new shortcut (right click>new>shortcut)

On my machine when it asks “type the location of the item” I enter this (including the quotes):

%windir%\system32\runas.exe /savecred /user:machine\administrator "C:\Program Files\Belkin\USB F5D7050\Wireless Utility\Belkinwcui.exe -T"

Points to note:

machine should be replaced with the name of your computer.

administrator should be replaced with the name of an administrator account. The administrator account you use must have a password.

C:\Program Files\Belkin\USB F5D7050\Wireless Utility is the path to the Belkin connection software (on my machine).

But you will probably need to change the path to the Belkinwcui.exe as appropriate to the model or the name of the location you installed the software.

To find the file location it might be an idea to use the windows search tool to find the file then right click on it and select properties to find the location which you can then copy and paste.

Don’t forget the –T bit at the end! Not sure what it does but it doesn’t work if you don’t use it!

When you are asked for the name of the shortcut, call it BelkinWirelessStarter

Now you need to change the “start in” setting:

Right click on the BelkinWirelessStarter shortcut icon you just made and click properties.

You need to Copy from the target box everything that is before Belkinwcui.exe and paste it in to the start in box

Click ok then reboot

The first time you log in to any account a DOS window will ask for the password for the administrator account you chose earlier.

Type in the password. The belkin icon in the notification area should appear. You may need to open it up and set the correct network up.

The next time you boot in to the same account you will not be asked for the password but the belkin software will auto-connect!

Message me if you have any probs.
