OK so her's what I've done. I cleaned everything up with Disk Cleanup. i usually do this on a fairly regular basis. My defrag is scheduled for onec per month at the beginning of the month. I ran the ATF and installed the profile hive cleanup. For the profile hive cleanup I just installed it. Does it run in the back ground or am I supposed to do something? I couldn't figure that part out.

So as far as the speed. It took forever to connect to the internet after doing all of this. Pages were the same if not a bit slower. So that's where I am.

did you check your fragmentation status?

also, two questions:

a. lappy or desktop?

b: what os?

werd, homey.

It is a desktop running Windows XP Pro. The frag status is good. Like I said I have it scheduled on a monthly so it is usually good. I am running McAfee if that helps at all. I'm guessing that it needs more RAM - just in general. I also figure that there is a setting somewhere that is keeping the internet slow. That of course is a guess hence the reason I'm here asking all these questions......

start > run > sysdm.cpl > general tab > that will tell you what speed processor you have in there, plus how much ram is in and how much is being used. If you could post that back, that would be helpful.......i gotta run for a bit, back later......

if atf doesn't clean anything, your processor is running at full speed, defrag doesn't need to be done, the only thing left is to toss another stick of ram down it's throat.

what's the exact make and model?

@macboatmaster...........mon ami, you have no idea...........

I went to the Crucial memory site and ran thier scanner. Here is what came up. In case it matters I can upgrade to 4GB of RAM for about $150. Will that help a great deal and is that a decent price? I know more RAM will help but will it solve this issue or is something else wrong also....................

Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop/PC

Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz Model 2, Stepping 9
CPU Speed: 2660 MHz

You have 256mb of ram in each of two slots. Do not upgrade to 4gb. Windows in 32bit can only see a max of 3gb or maybe 3.5gb. My advice Scrap the two sticks that are in and buy two 1gb sticks. Dual channel is supported so you will gain max benefit by using two identical sticks of 1gb each in slot - most likely A1 and A2. Dual channel means the processor has two channels for memory use and if you put 2gb in one slot you will not have the advantage of dual channel.
Link is here to your computer. Obviously this is how it was shipped from Dell, but your processor and the motherboard are as shown on the site
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...i/sm/specs.htm
If you go Back on the Dell link I sent you, you can have a look at the guide to replacing ram etc.
The Crucial recommended ram for that Dell may now be better than that mentioned on the Dell specs.
What you posted above is the specs of your PC from the Crucial scanner, it also told you below that what you could have and the specification.

Could I get 2 1GB sticks and put them in with the existing 512 and have basiclly 2.5GB?

Also, is this my problem or will this just mask the problem?????

nope, just buy 2 1 gig sticks and slap them in there, toss the 512 somewhere for a rainy day.

xp on 2 gigs will treat you great. This is not masking the problem, this is solving.

Ram is to computers as to money is to the real world.

in the real world, you have a problem, you throw money at it.

in a computer, you have a problem, you throw ram at it.

I'll order it tomorrow when I get a chance. I've been wanting to do that anyway.

Is there anything else I should be looking at regarding this issue?

In theory yes. If the 512 in the two 256 sticks are the original and have not been moved by anyone they will most likely be in the proper slots. You can get the two 1gb sticks BUT any new ram will ONLY RUN at the speed of the slowest ram in the system. So if you have for arguments sake PC3200 which operates at 400Mhz (that is the speed) WITH 2700 at 333Mhz , the ram will only operate at the lowest speed. Look again at the crucial scan result. What is the ram ie: PC2700 etc that is in.
Buy TWO 1Gb sticks of the same. Try that with existing 512. It is no use going to any more ram because of what I said above. On reflection that is the best bet, you have four slots so keep the 512
and put the two x 1gb in.

Postscript. Now seen Valis coming back in. Do as he says.

So let me get this straight. I should pull the 2 256 sticks and replace them with 2 1GBs thus ending up with 2GB total. Right????
