How do I Stop Specific Updates from Trying to Install?
Every time I switch my PC on, the Automatic Updates icon appears in my system tray, telling me that updates are available to install. I do not want some of these updates. How do I get rid of them so that they do not keep appearing and waiting to be installed?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Go to the Windows Update site and choose "Custom" and it will show the available updates. Click on the plus sign next to an update and at the bottom there's a box "Don't show this update again". Check that for the ones you don't want to install. You can always click on "Restore hidden updates" if you change your mind.

Personally I have Automatic Updates turned off and I just go to the site every couple of weeks to see what's out there. I can then choose which updates to install.

that's the procedure i use here too
turn OFF Auto Updates, check every few days and choose Custom. Select what you need/want.

Although one or more high-priority updates may be released out of cycle, Microsoft normally releases new high-priority updates on the second Tuesday of every month. Several of them were released today.

Set Automatic Updates to only notify you of new high-priority updates and not to download or install them. Once you receive notification by the yellow shield in the taskbar, click Windows Update in the Start menu or open Internet Explorer and click Tools - Windows Update to load the site. Once the site loads, select the custom option to do a scan. Once the scan completes, you can then select or deselect the updates you want or don't want.

I wouldn't advise turning off Automatic Updates completely because the Security Center will complain and you may forget to check the site regularly to do a scan.
