I found 3 of these Java related files on my desktop. I came here and found a closed thread with the same questions I have.

Mumbodog was very helpful with his suggestions but I have further questions.

I went to the add/remove programs to remove all java files. ( I had just updated my java the same day before I started having problems.)

I found that I have 2 programs that are "Java (TM) 6 update 18" and "Java (TM) 6 update 2".

Then, I have 4 programs titled "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 updates" versions 10, 5, 6, and 9.

Should I uninstall ALL 6 of those Java programs before I download the latest version or should I leave the J2SE Runtime programs?

I am using WXP, sp3, IE8. And I know nothing about Java.

Uninstall all of them. The name changed a bit, but they are all the same thing.

I don't know why Sun hasn't done something about this. If you uninstall any of them, you will almost certainly take parts from all of them. So that means what is left will be of no use. So just remove all of them and get one new installation. Try to remember to remove the old one before installing a new one in the future (with browsers closed so they can update).

well, I deleted everything and updated java. all seems well, except . . .

. . . the original problem, that had me messing with java in the first place, is still there.
we play chess at yahoo and have for years. in just the past week, we are having problems with the board slowing down, then freezing. i thought that it might be a java problem which is why i tried to update it.

the yahoo chess board is still a problem and i wonder if it is a yahoo problem but there seem to be a lot of people playing.

i am not having problems with anything other web site.

Does it say that Java is needed for the board? Is javascript or Flash involved?

yes, javascript and java is needed. I searched the yahoo site and didn't see anything about about flash but I'm sure it is needed also.

. . . just checked. My flash isn't updated to the latest.

Could that be the problem?

just to let you know, we've been playing chess at the yahoo site all morning with no problems. No hesitation, no freezing - all is normal.

I think the problem was from yahoo, not my java. At least I finally got around to updating -g-.

Yes, the sites have problems, too, and we usually blame our poor machines for it.

Glad you got it all figured out. Did you ever figure out what those files were? I suppose that if they stopped being made and you could delete them, it didn't matter what they were, right?

those files were definitely for java programmers. But I haven't received anymore and I did delete them.

I only hope that they didn't matter . . .

I'm pretty confident that they don't matter to your system. They may have been debugging files produced due to an incorrect setting. Developers of Java applications would have a use for them.
