Very slow start up and strange things happening.

Hi, my laptop has become very slow in starting up. Up to ten minutes in fact! It goes throuygh all processes as normal, but just takes ten times longer!
Also, my mouse and curser are acting strange. the curser judders across the screen rather than moving in a smoth normal motion, and it occasionally dissapears completely for a second or two.
All programs take ages to load and generally my PC is taking 5-10 times longer to do anything than it normaly does.

Everything was fine up until 2 or 3 days ago when this started happening. I have NOT downloaded anything over the past week.

I'm no HJT logfile expert, but I can offer the following. You have an quite a few programs launching at startup and running in the background. It may help to minimize the load. Click here to go to a site where you can enter the file name of items in the startup list, what they are for and recommendations regarding whether you need the item. To get to the startup list in msconfig go to Start/Run, type in "msconfig" (no quotes) and click OK, then click the startup tab.

Additionally, any program I've ever known put out by Symantec is usually quite a resource hog. How much RAM do you have installed?

Another thing worth checking is to open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), Processes tab and see what is using memory.

Are you using the laptop touchpad or an external wired/wireless mouse?

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Also, I don't know how come you are running two versions of Java Runtime Environment, a recent one and a dinosaur one (jre1.5.0_04). Uninstall all old versions of Java and make sure you have the latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_18.

That's one reason why I asked for a HijackThis uninstall file. I suspect there are several outdated(including SJRE 1.5.0.04) and unneeded programs in that computer.

Double-click the Synaptics entry, then click the Driver tab. What's the driver version and driver date listed there?

The most current driver for that touchpad is version 14.0.3. You can download it from here. It's the topmost link. Agree to the EULA, then download and save it. Close all open windows first, then install it. Restart your computer afterwards.

Thank you!
Ive updated the driver and installed the latest Java.

I also uninstalled some programs but my laptop is still as slow as it has been over the past week. Everything takes about 10-20 seconds to open, and it still takes about 5-7 mins to start up.

Also, I saw I had 83 processes running! Ive got that down to 53 but cant seem to get any lower.

Well, Symantec is certainely not the best choice for a slow computer. You could consider a much lighter alternative. The ccSvcHst.exe process has been known to cause high CPU usage on many computers.

Also,

Other than your antivirus, firewall and Internet connectivity service, the Startup Type on most of your non-Microsoft Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

To do so, click on Start > Run > type services.msc

Scroll down the list and locate your non-Microsoft services (023 HijackThis log entries). Change their Startup Type from Automatic to Manual, then Stop the services.

tones1966... Never did see a response to my question regarding how much RAM you have installed. If you have 512MB or less, that could also be a factor in your slow system speed, especially with the startup load you have.

1) u hv many services started.....go to system configuration and configure the programs which are not required...!! go to run in start menu and write MSCONFIG and then go to startup tab and then configure as required

2) increase ur ram....use windows live onecare antivirus

What's the service tag number of that Dell Inspiron 9600? It should be a combination of 7 numbers and letters on a sticker on the case.
