Solved: the registry
i put this under xp...but my question actually relates to all windows os's.

a lot of the time i get a computer in that blue screens on start up
or has the black screen that people think are files that are missing

but i read that its actually the registry that has been corrupted by virus etc...
is there a way to repair this easily
i ran a registry repair tool but it used a default xp reg...and it started the machine up..but i had to install all apps
as they were not in the registry.

is this a case that if people backed up there registry it would be easy to repair.

whats the best way to run backups these days...imaging software?

First never use registry repair or cleaner tools......they will cause problems as you just found out........you can backup the registry yes ....but the best way is to make a image backup...that means it will backup all files and programs including your Operating System.

Acronis TrueImage is one such program.........it is not the only one but it works

Strange question from someone running a computer repair business. There's no one single cause for blue screens, and there's not one single solution. The registry is just one part of Windows.

i know that DH,but most of the time when i google its the registry,

i know blue screens can also be caused by incorrect drivers, incompatible software etc...
but i wondered if anything could be done to fix these problems easy...

so are you guys against such aplications as ccleaner and advanced system care 3 which correct registry problems?

Google search results for blue screen errors is not indicative of the causes of such errors. I'd say in most cases, the problem is not the registry.

With regards to actual "registry problems" (how would you know that for sure?), I've never seen a registry repair utility resolve anything.

Personal experience and seeing all the problems caused by Registry Cleaners on numerous Pc help forums...clearly shows, that they can do more harm than good.
But, it keeps the help forums busy.

well i think this discussion...and anti virus discussions and things like that are a lot like religion. i have noticed many times when a computer isnt performing well or explorer keeps refreshing.

and i run advanced system cleaner 3 which runs maintenance and cleaners etc.
and i definately find an increase in performance. sometimes its the first thing i do
before a malware scan.

what works for me, wont work for someone else...i just find that...its interesting
...very

and just so you know....i did not mean the blue screens are registry errors...the black screen with missing or corrupt files usually are.

Think of the registry as a reflection of what's going on in the system, to put it simply. Registry problems are usually a RESULT of something wrong in the system, not a cause. If you rid yourself of malware when it occurs, the registry entries will usually correct themselves at the same time.

But I said USUALLY, not always. So I back up my registry daily at bootup with ERUNT, in case I need to restore.

I also clone my entire HD regularly. Which one I will restore depends on the kind of problem I'm having. When in doubt, or if you're a newbie, a clone of your C drive is always a great thing, will really save your b--- , and is worth every penny you spend on the extra HD and connector.

BTW--Advanced System Cleaner 3 is made by Iobit, the Chinese company that Malwarebytes accuses of pirating their definitions. The evidence is very strongly on Malwarebytes' side.

If you did get any benefit from it, it was from the other features, not from the registry cleaner. But Ccleaner does all those things and you're not putting money in the pocket of Iobit.

Next time you get a blue screen, copy down the # after the 0x, and get back to us.
