Outlook Express Error 0x800C0133
I didn't find this site until after I tried a fix found on google...

I renamed the inbox.dbx to oldinbox.dbx...but I can't get the old inbox messages to import back into Outlook Express. We're using 6 here at work.

This is on another person's computer...not mine. But I'm the one stuck with fixing things.

Everything is running fine except I need to bring in the old inbox messages. Is there any quick fix to this? He needs his old messages.

Thanks...

You can paste the following into run and find the Inbox DBX delete and a new one will be created when you open OE again.

As for those messages I'm afraid they went into Cyberspace never to be seen again.

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{4448A8F3-817B-4212-8F28-8301CB56F7A6}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Bill, I'm sure they're not gone...I saved them as oldinbox.dbx so the files are still there. You're saying there's no way to grab them and bring them into a folder? I'm sure there has to be a way. I guess I'll keep looking around. I thought for sure someone here could help me. I already have the email back up and running just wanted to grab the old inbox messages.

Assuming you can access the messages in the Inbox.dbx (i.e., although you may not be able to receive messages, you can see, read, highlight, etc. the messages in it), why don't you create a new folder, then mark all the messages in the Inbox and copy to the new folder? Then delete oldInbox.dbx. Close OE, then reopen. A new Inbox will automatically be created. Now reverse the copy you just did; i.e., from the folder you created into the Inbox.

I think your problem is that the Inbox got corrupted, so no longer works. But the messages in it are probably not corrupted.

I followed some directions I found after googling error number: 0x800c0133. I changed the inbox.dbx to oldinbox.dbx. I then reopened OE and a new inbox was created and OE was working again. What I realized after the fact was that I should have created a new folder in OE and dragged all the inbox messages into that. But since I didn't do that...I was trying to follow the earlier directions and they just ended with "create a new folder, name it "Old Inbox". Search for oldinbox.dbx and the old emails should be inside the oldinbox.dbx right now" So I have the old inbox.dbx called oldinbox.dbx inside the store folder. If I create a folder called oldinbox will the messages appear in the folder? I tried to import the messages into the folder and it says it worked...but no old messages. I was thinking about just using OE-Mail Recovery if all else fails but It seems like I'm so close...

No. I may be missing something, but don't see why this is a major issue. You cannot export e-mail messages from one box to another, only to Outlook or to Microsoft Server. But you don't need to "export" the messages, Just go to the oldinbox.dbx, click on the first message to highlight it, then hit Ctrl/End to move to the last message, hold down the Shift key and click the last message. All messages are now highlighted. Right-click in the highlighted area, and pick either Move to folder. . . or Copy to folder and a window will open showing all your folders (may have to click the "+" next to Local Folders). Click on the Inbox folder and click OK. If the messages themselves were not corrupted, you should now have all the messages that were in oldinbox.dbx in the new Inbox.

DKTaber, I appreciate the help but you sound frustrated with me...anyway, how do you go to oldinbox.dbx and click on the first message? I don't understand this...you can't click on a .dbx file can you?

I get the whole highlighting messages and moving them but the messages aren't in OE any longer. They exist as a .dbx file in the store folder. I've already tried to open the .dbx file in notepad and it says it's too large.

So either I'm not explaining myself clearly or...

Once again. OE is working now because I just changed the old inbox.dbx to oldinbox.dbx. Opened OE and it started up with a new inbox. All the folders have what they should except inbox...it's now empty. Is there any way to access the .dbx file that's now called oldinbox.dbx?

That's all...if not, I'll just tell the guy to not keep his inbox so full next time and write it off...but I still think if the files aren't corrupted in the oldinbox.dbx file I should be able to pull them into a new folder in OE...but then again, what do I know. That's why I'm hear asking for help.

Sorry if I sounded frustrated; I'm not. I just wondered if I was missing something that made what you want to do not doable. Yes, you can open any .dbx file by double-clicking it IF. . . IF you have associated it with OE. If it's not associated with OE, a pop-up window will ask you to select the program to open it. You have to browse to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express and double-click msimn.exe. Once that association has been make, OE will open and display the message sin oldinbox.dbx. Highlight and copy them to the new Inbox folder.

Here's how I save emails in OE.
1. Open Windows Explorer/ create a new folder, Name it "Saved Emails".
2. Open OE - click on Inbox.. Hightlight the emails you wish to save (Use the CTRL key to highlight multi emails).
3. Drag/Drop the emails you've highlighted onto the new "Saved Emails" folder.
It's best to save your emails to an external storage device... this way you won't lose them if you have to re-install the windows OS.
4. To view old emails, Browse to your "Saved Emails" folder - Double Click the email you wish to view.. it will open in OE (slim).
OR you can open OE, resize the window then Drag & Drop the email from your "Saved Emails" folder into the Inbox panel of OE.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Hi steveo_biggame and welcome to TSG.

The error indicates a corrupted Inbox and you did exactly the right thing by renaming it to generate a new Inbox.dbx so OE will run without errors or freezes.

You'll need to run an extractor on the old Inbox to recover any messages.

CLICK HERE to download a freeware version of DBXtract.

Create a New folder on the desktop and place the DBX file in it.

Download and unzip the extractor to the desktop.
Double click the DBXtract.exe file to run it.

In the Action section, set it to save "By Subject". The "Remove Re:" will remove the Re: from the message title of replies so it's up to you if you leave that checked or not.
DO NOT check Recover mode.

In the Input section, click the Browse button.
Browse to the folder containing the DBX file and click OK.
The "Path" line should now point to the folder with the DBX file and the "File" line should have the name of the DBX file.

In the Output section, click the Browse button. Browse to the same folder as the Input.
The Input Path and the Output Path should be the same.
Click the Extract button.
If there are any messages that can be recovered, they will show up in the same folder with the DBX and be in the form of individual EML messages.

Note: If the DBX file is very large, it may take quite a while for DBXtract to recover the messages. Just let it run until it's finished.

To get the EML's back into OE, just drag and drop them onto any folder in the OE folder list (don't put them back into the Inbox or you'll just overload and corrupt it again) or onto the view pane of an open folder in OE.

T.
