question about system recovery for XP
under system recovery you have two options.. full system restore (destructive) and full system restore (with backup).

am i to understand that if i do a full system restore (with backup) that there will be a folder under C/mybackup after the restore, from which i can recover my pictures, music, documents that i want to keep and then delete the folder when i'm done? I want to be sure because i can't lose my family pictures.

thanks in advance.

I highly suggest that you back up your photos and other important personal data to CD-R's before you do any kind of system recovery. There's no 100% guarantee that it'll all remain intact, and people have been known to make the wrong selections during a system recovery and lose everything forever.

Is there one or more problems with your computer that you want to discuss here? Some people are too quick to do a system recovery to resolve problems when those problems may easily be resolved by other means.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

If they were my pictures, I'd back them (and anything else important) up to disk regardless of how you proceed.

my problems
well it started with a random crash.. my pc ran scandisk on reboot and deleted win87em.dll. after that my IE would not open, nor my windows explorer. everything else seems fine. i ran in safemode, and downloaded the win87em.dll file and put it back into windows/system32 and it ran fine again for a day. Now IE and windows explorer wont run again.. and the win87em.dll file is still there. ive tried deleteing and re-installing the file.. no go. ive done scandisk, virus checks, diskcleanup and defrag, tried starting IE with no add-ons.. nothing works. i'm stuck here.

Here is the support site for the Gateway FX530S desktop. I suggest you save this site so you'll have it when needed.

Here is the FX series user manual for Windows XP. Expand the "Troubleshooting" link, then expand the "Recovering Your System" link, then start reading.

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? Have you tried downloading and reinstalling it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2. Close all open windows first,, then install it in its default location. Run a scan with it - which will take less than 30 seconds. Save the resulting log in Notepad. Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

I'll be waiting to see the log. Hopefully, it'll show us something. The scan really should be done in normal mode, but if you have to do it in safe mode, it's better than nothing.

If you can start your computer in normal mode and then run a HijackThis scan and then save the log and then post it here, that'll be better.

i ran a normal hijack and it still won't let me post the results here without giving me an internet connection error, so much trouble restarting back and forth..

I think i'm going to go get a flash drive to save my pics/music/documents and just do a recovery, then update windows / drivers ect and put my pictures stuff on. Mabye this will clear off a lot of un neccessary things ive packed in over the years that file cleanup might be missing, fresh start can't hurt can it?

thanks so much for the help flavallee and sorry for wasting your time here.

If you're going to back up your data on a USB thumb drive, you should also back it up on one or more CD-R's. If your computer doesn't recognize the USB thumb drive and doesn't allow you to copy your data back to your computer, you won't be a happy camper.

A fresh install is the best option in some cases.

And you didn't waste my time. That's why I'm here.
