Registry tweaks to speed up access to USB disk drives?
Hi folks. Long time no see.

Still running XP sp3 + all updates on my Inspiron 9100 laptop.
Have two 1TB Seagate Free Agents on the USB ports in the back.

Any registry tweaks to speed up write access to these disks? (Yes, they're
regularly defragged and free space is wiped.)

TIA.

Don't know of any registry that can do that, but you can try changing the Policies from Device Manager of the device to "Optimize for performance" instead.

Probably you have thought of this....

If you use both those USB drives plugged in and ON together, it might be a power issue causing a lag.......

Do you use both and if so, do you need to have them both on if you do?

Done, and thanks! Was set to "Optimize for quick removal".
Will boot and try some test backups. (See, that's what the forum's all about!)

Here's a thing for you and others to chew on, given that Ofqr disables
write-caching..... Rarely, maybe once every couple months for no particular
reason that I can identify (and I've thought about it), I would get several
"delayed write failed" messages, usually $mft was in the filename of
whatever it was trying to write. Almost always, XP BSODs on me within
a few minutes. Hate to have to abuse the power button that way.

Wonder if setting Ofp will affect that infrequent but really, really annoying condition?

Thanks again, argentolee.

Good questions. Yes, together. They're on the same circuit in the house,
I could string a cord and put one of the drives on a different circuit..

I backup (manually and w Secura Backup) F: to G: on a regular basis.
I'm looking at Acronis True Image to replace all the manual noise.

I guess I don't need G powered up unless I'm doing file copies....

Thanks!

Oh, I thought they were being powered by the USB ports.....like flash drives....nevah mind

(I have a 250GB Clickfree that sometimes has to be plugged into 2 USB ports....when doing large file moving, or it just happens that a given USB port, is too underpowered)

I don't think the AC power would affect anything. You know, you should have them in a surge protector....don't you use one for the notebook?

Just to share with you, I use Cobian Backup and Toucan for my backup solution.
Robocopy is also a good solution for a mirror copy.

Thumbs down for SyncToy, Richcopy and xcopy because they either have the 8.3 file naming format problem or bug with ACL.
