CAPS LOCK reversed
Here is a post from jonto12 in 2009 that has expired but I have the same problem:

last night , I experienced a strange series of occurences on my computer (Windows XP/ PRO) that I thought had ended - .

when I was typing, that I was doing so in all caps - even though my Caps Lock was disabled.

When I enabled Caps Lock, it then started typing all lower case letters.

Other keyboard symptoms: the period and the comma were not available, only able to type > or < with or without the Shift key. Also, the Shift key didn't work with most keys for characters. There were also issues in selecting text in a field.

Another nuisance during this period is that when I clicked on a link, it would open up a new browser window, as opposed to the link opening in the same window.

Frustrated, I restarted the computer. I made sure no keys were stuck. When I rebooted, it appeared I was still experiencing these weird symptoms. I had double clicked on an icon on my desktop, it had selected more than one icon and opened the first one to the right.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? The more people know about this, the better! please help - I have formated the entire machine and drives - problem just reappears.

If you are still there jonto12 did you fix the problem? My problem is on a Dell Latitude notebook. Someone suggested to remove/install the the battery to do a reboot. I checked the Accessibility Options thing. It's not that. An external keyboard does the same thing. Ran adaware and virus checker. I also changed from hibernate to standby.

Sounds like the shift key is stuck down or broken. new keyboard?

I tried a second keyboard connected to the external port of the notebook and the results were the same. No change. I did read about an Autocorrect function in Word that I will play with tonight but the problem doesn't just happen in Word.

I also read some people saying to change from hibernate to standby so I did that too without success.

Connecting a 2nd keyboard does not disable the built in keyboard, so if the shift key is stuck you'll get the same problem.
You need to disconnect the built in keyboard to confirm that's the problem.
With a 2nd keyboard attached, you might be able to disable the built in keyboard in Device Manager rather than disassembling the laptop to unplug the keyboard:
Click Start | Run (or press WinKey+R), type devmgmt.msc, press Enter
Expand the Keyboards section.
Double click the entry for the built in keyboard and see if the Device Usage section is available on the General Tab.
You may have to look in Device Manager both with and without the 2nd keyboard installed to identify which entry is for the built-in keyboard.
They will not have identical names, Windows will add a number when a 2nd device with the same name is installed, so if you see Standard PS/2 Keyboard and Standard PS/2 Keyboard #2, the one without the number will be the built-in.

You might be right. I will try that tonight. I'm thinking that maybe it really is a keyboard problem now. The left SHIFT button doesn't work but since the 2nd keyboard did the same I thought it was software. Thank you.

I removed the internal keyboard and connected up an external keyboard and it's working fine now. You were right. Thanks.
