hello hello.

i have spent about two hours looking up ways to fix this problem i have with setting up a printer for my laptop. im using a dell latitude d820, running xp, and im trying to instal this canon pixma MP490.

ive used this thread from this same site to try and fix the problem:

ive tried pretty much everything shown in that thread, and there has been no avail to a fix. i have tried to install the printers software it came with, yet that needs the printer spooler to work before even installing.

i have also failed to mention the log from the microsoft fixit application i ran for the printer spooler error. here is the error:

Found a problem: localspl.dll is missing and a backup copy could not be found. Please open a command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) then press Enter.

i keep doing so, and it asks me to insert a "profesional pack 2" cd which i do not have.

Look in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder to make sure it is really missing.
Check in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 and see if a copy exists there.
If it does, COPY it to the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

If you don`t find it in the i386 folder mentioned above, look in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache folder.

Go to the Control Panel and click on Admin Tools. From there, click on
Services. Is there a line called Print Spooler?

Open the Control Panel. Double click Administrative Tools.
Double click Services, scroll down to Print Spooler, right click and select properties.
Change the Startup type to Automatic.

Use cleanspl.exe to clean spooler registry keys:- See below

1) Download Cleanspl.zip from link cleanspl.exe

2) Extract the zip file, you will see Cleanspl.exe and PRINT_DEFAULT.reg

3) Run the Cleanspl.exe and click "Clean Spooler" and click Yes to Start.

4) Click Yes on each notification and restart your computer.

5) When computer boots up, the print sub-system will be cleaned-up.

6) Double click PRINT_DEFAULT.reg to restore default Printer Monitor.

7) Restart the serveruse the cleanspl.exe tool from the Windows kit to clean spooler registry keys
