Solved: won't power down & won't acknowledge restart
When I select shut down or restart, system saves settings & I get "Windows is shutting down" message but it must be shut off manually. However, it does shut down on it's own if I select stand-by. If I have installed software or hardware that require a restart, the restart is not acknowledged the next time the computer is turned on.
Another issue - - event #7 - hard drive has bad sectors. I think I have attached info saved from the event log. If it's not attached and could be useful, I'll try again.
My computer came with XP Pro installed....upgradeable to VISTA.....and VISTA is the software actually received so I have no XP Pro CD to try alternate bootup methods.
Alittle more background info - FYI -
I went through two UPS's (both indicated the house wiring was faulty) before my other half determined the wiring was in fact faulty and fixed it. That being said, this computer shut down fine for over a year plugged into the faulty outlet with the first power supply. I believe the power down problem started when I installed the 2nd UPS. Once the wiring was fixed, I installed another new UPS. The system recognizes there is new hardware but not the installation & restart.
And one more piece of info from defrag report.... 2 fragments - 8MB - could not be defragmented. Files are in \WINDOWS\System32\config\SYSTEM.

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, looking at the attacjed Word document, it mentions the bad block, like you said.

Have you tried a scandisk, to repair any bad sector's, as this may be a cause for the problems.

  • Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  • Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  • Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

When its completed, see if that solves the problem. If not, we'll try something else

Regards

eddie

scandisk did not help
Hi Eddie - Thanks for replying. Unfortunately scandisk did not resolve the problem. Bad sectors still exist; still need to power down computer manually; system still doesn't know it's been restarted. It recognizes the UPS hardware has been installed but doesn't recognize the system has been turned off and back on.

You say that you're using UPS's, but what happens if you plug the computer directly into the wall socket, bypassing the UPS?

Its just to see if the UPS is the main problem, or the actual computer.

Also, can we have a look to see what's running when you're trying to shut down:

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Think I already tried by-passing the UPS but will try again. If necessary I will run the HJTInstall program and send you the results. Either way - I shall return. . . . .

I see you're running F-secure which is fine, but you also have a beta program installed, from here:

http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/down...s/home-office/

The problem with beta programs, is that they can still be buggy as they're still in the test phase.

Did you notice if the problems started after you installed these programs?

Also, you have a toolbar installed which is deemed optional, so uninstalling that may help.

--

Go to AddRemove programs via the Control Panel and uninstall this:

Ask Toolbar

Reboot and see if that helps.

Hi,

Concerning the shutdown issue. This sounds like a thread which windows cannot terminate.

Try altering the autokill in the regisrty to enabled. This is will force close any threads in use.
Should this work then you need to look at the root cause.

Root causes can be av scanning at shutdown or even with UPS software( since this with APC software)

Anyway - to alter the autokill value..

start - run - regedit
HKEY_Current User - Control Panel - Desktop - AutoEndTasks (Change to 1 - this is enabled)
Also change the value of HungAppTimeout and Waittokillapptimeout to 1000

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - system - currentcontrolset -control - waittokillservicetimeout to 1000

This will make xp shutdown faster and force close any threads which won't play ball

FOLOW THE REGEDIT exactly

let me know

Hi Eddie - As far as I know anything from F-Secure should have come via Charter security software. Is there a way to tell a beta program from other programs?

Hi lasertech - RE: editting registry . . . I am alittle leary of this process unless I am certain it will resolve my problem.
The system takes only a minute or two to save the settings and display the windows is shutting down screen. Then it hangs there but doesn't power down unless I hold in the button on the front or flip the switch on the back. I can make it "restart" by flipping the switch off and back on quickly. Regardless of how it gets turned off, the system doesn't doesn't acknowledge it has been turned off & restarted. Here are the bubbles that pop-up everytime the system boots up:
No APC battery backup present.
Unable to communicate with UPS battery backup.
Found new hardware. (reboot required)

Here is another piece of info that may useful -
In Control Panel -> Power Options, there is generally no Power Meter tab. Sometimes it appears if I log off as a user and back on. BUT the power down issue still exists.

When you turn the system on tap the F8 key until you get the boot menu. If Windows begins to load you missed it and have to try again. In the boot menu select Safe Mode. Try a restart and see if it works from Safe Mode.

If Restart works from Safe Mode then surely the problem is caused by a program (or thread0 running in normal mode. If it were me I'd prefer to try to find what program, but when and if you try lasertech's registry edit you can and should save the registry first. The easiest way to save the registry is to create a System Restore Point.
