I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you can't dual-boot a hard drive taken from one computer and placed into another. The hardware changes will be too numerous for the system to deal with.

You can copy your personal data onto CD's or USB drive and transport them over to the new computer. You could even network them to do the copy procedure if you like. Another possibility is to slave the old hard drive in the new computer, but it would need to have an IDE port or some interface adapter for that to work.

Another point to keep in mind, if any of your data depends on the software installed on the old computer, you will need to install (not copy) that program on the new one.

thanks for the good news
how about if i ghost the drive to an external hard drive. then connected the external drive to the new computer to run my programs .
the problem i have is the original disks for our buisness program are no longer available as it has been upgraded to new technology .
we will eventually upgrade but because my hard drive is dieing i need to do something urgently

That's not going to work. You could how ever make a Ghost image of the dying hdd, install a new hdd and restore the image to it.

The only way you're going to get your programs to run on the new computer is to install them on it.

You could convert your old XP machine to a virtual machine with the free VMware vCenter Converter, then run it on your new machine with the free VMware Player.
