Solved: slow computer
Hi,
I hope someone can help me. My computer is getting slower each day with more "page not responding", and extremely slow downloads of websites, windows not closing or if they finally do, it comes down like a slow curtain and then my icons slowly repopulate the desktop.
I have had several "runtime errors" and "virtual memory too low" messages in the past few days. I apologize for not making a note of all of the error messages but they are numerous.
I ran the SuperAntiSpyware that you had recommended to someone else and it found 39 tracking cookies which I "fixed" However did not seem to help matters.
I ran Malwarebytes and had a clean report.
Enclosed is the logfile from Trends HijackThis.
-Windows XP SP3
-Toshiba L25 S1216
Processer - 1.60 gigahertz Intel
- 64 kilobytes primary memory cache
-1024 kilobytes secondary memory cache

Drives - 40 gigabytes usable harddrive capacity
- 26.49 gigabytes drive free space

I think I could remove a lot of "junk" but do not know which ones are important. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Another scanner you may want to consider before going further is Hitman Pro;

http://www.surfright.nl/en

It currently has a 30 day trial period and may find something the others haven't.
How many antivirus and antimalware applications do you use at the same time? I noted in
the HJTlog Microsoft Security Essentials, Symantec and PCTools. If you also have MBAM and SAS
using real time protection it would be suprising if your computer even booted up. I noticed also
you have Windows Live OneCare. If nothing remarkable shows up with a Hitman Pro scan
or you decide not to use it, go to OneCare and get a full scan, clean up and tuneup done.

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/d....htm?s_cid=sah

For security I use just MSE and MalwareBytes Full version with realtime protection asSometimes
MSE doesn't address all the malware isues. As for the HJT log I would getrid of anything to do
with Google and I believe if you doget a response from one of the advisors here they may suggest
getting rid of,

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

but obviously wait for further advice on HJT. Doing the Hitman Pro scan and OneCareservice should
take up some time anyway. I couldn't help but reply once I noticed you have an old diehard Toshiba
as I do.

Good luck.

First of all,get rid of the Google toolbar

Second of all, There are some programs that are running that are not necessary to have running all the time. You can stop them by:
Start>Run>type in "msconfig">go to the start up tab>untick all start ups that you don't need to have all the time.

Start>Run>type in "msconfig">go to the services tab>untick all of the service that you don't need running.

You should also get rid of programs that you don't use.

Download Atf Cleaner and use it. That should also help.

You also should defragment all of your drives and/or partitions.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools>Disk Defragmenter

Use Disk Cleanup
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools>Disk Cleanup

Make sure you have a good antivirus and firewall protection.
Some thing like Comodo Firewall protection and Avira Antivir works well.
Keep Malwarebytes and Superantispyware by your side and use it often.
This should keep your computer clean of virus threats.

This should make a difference.
Give all this a try.

Your HiJackThis log can't be viewed as an attachment, so I'm copying-and-pasting it here.

Give me a few minutes to review it, then I'll get back to you.

Uninstall these programs:

Windows Defender

Uniblue Registry Booster

then restart your computer.

After it restarts and settles down, go into the C:\Program Files folder and delete the Windows Defender and Uniblue folders, if they're still there.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Let's see what's installed in that computer. I can see already that your java program is very outdated.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

---------------------------------------------------------------

There are several programs that are auto-loading and running in the background. Some of them don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually started when needed.

I can assist you with trimming down the startup load.

FWIW, I find that MSE doesn't play well on systems running slower than 2.6 Ghz. and less than 1 Gig. of RAM.

pointlessforest, I notice you're running at 1.6 Ghz, but I didn't see how much RAM you have.

Consider disabling MSE for a quick test.

Thank you for all the helpful suggestions.
So far here is what I have done.
-Uninstalled Google toolbar
-Uninstalled Windows Defender (as it did show up on add/remove programs
--Uniblue did not show up on add/remove programs, so I did go ahead and delete it from"program files" (I saw things there that I do not use and some I do not recognize but left everything intact other than the Uniblue for now)

- tried to remove AOL spyware protection via add/remove prog. and received message (window) that said:
"wise uninstall"
Could not open install.log file

I do not use AOL at all .

-have previously used Symantec and PC tools, but uninstalled them.......or so I thought....

I defragment and do system cleanup on a regular basis, as updating Malware bytes weekly (and scanning).

I just now uninstalled the SuperantiSpyware as things seemed even worse since I installed it. The only ones that do not seem to bog this computer down are Malwarebytes and Windows Security Essentials.

THEN.......I rebooted.

Got this message:
"microsoft error reporting"
Some unexpected errors have happened to software you recently used. You were not asked to send these error reports at the time they occurred. (then I had a choice to send now or send later)...I chose to send later as with 56k modem transfer time said 47 minutes.... (I received this message yesterday as well and chose not to send report then) It seems to me it was after I did install the SuperantiSpyware.

THEN....shortly after that, also received another "Virtual memory minimum too low" message.

I do not use my computer to download a lot of stuff. No music like the young people do. But it sure seems like a can of worms at the moment.
Also here is Hijack this file that I just ran....

I still think that Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is causing your problem. It runs as a process called MsMpEng and it is very resource hungry. It can cause severe lag of response on any system that is running at less than 2.66 Ghz. speed and/or less than 1 Gig of memory.

As I have now found, you cannot disable any part of the MSE program that will stop the MsMpEng process from running. You can see its effects on your resources by looking in Task Manager. It's the top dog in there. The only way I have found to stop it is to uninstall it.

That is not to say that MSE isn't a great program but just to say it doesn't work well on systems with limited resources.

Uninstall it and you'll get your performance back.

pointlessforest:

I recently started using Microsoft Security Essentials and it works fine for me, but I have 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM in both of my desktops, so I haven't experienced an issue with it because of having a small amount of RAM.

You might try uninstalling it, as surferdude2 advised, then see what happens.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager, then click the + in IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

Double-click Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel to open their properties window, then click Advanced Settings(tab).

Both transfer modes should be set on "DMA if available".

If any of them are set on "PIO only", change it to "DMA if available", then click Apply - OK.

Restart your computer only if you had to change any setting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Open these 2 temp folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

Select and delete everything that's inside these 2 temp folders. If a few files resist deletion, leave them alone and delete everything else.

After you're done, restart your computer.

Hi, I checked my task manager and iexplore is anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000K, svchost.exe is 20,000+ and wuaudit is around 25,000. I tried to keep the taskmanager on to monitor it, and while the "waves" of slowness happen the MSMP usage is around 5000. (I have seen it up to 28000K though at times) Also, when MSE is downloading updates, I just walk away, as it does render the computer useless.
It is the lesser of the evils for me because I have tried many other antivirus programs and they are even worse (often ceasing up the whole computer for up to an hour). For a while this morning everything was as responsive as when my computer was new. For now I am going to try the different things that you all suggested and I shall report back. Once again I thank you very kindly for your input, I really appreciate it.

Several people have asked, but unless i missed it i still dont see how much ram is on that machine. According to Toshiba for the model you listed(Toshiba L25 S1216), that machine came stock with only 256mb of memory

Quote:
L25-S1216 Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Intel® Celeron® M processor 380, 256MB DDR2,
40GB 5400rpm PATA, CD-RW/DVD-ROM, 15” XGA, ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200M,
Atheros® 802.11 b/g wireless-LAN, CD control buttons, 90 day limited warranty
PSL2XU-02400J 032017485587

Operating System2
• Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Processor and Chipset3
• Intel® Celeron® M Processor 380
o 1.60GHz, 1MB L2, 400MHz FSB
• ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200M Chipset
Memory4
• Configured with 256MB DDR2 SDRAM (both memory slots may be
occupied)
• 256MB(min)/2048MB (max), 2 memory slots using 256MB, PC4200
DDR2 533MHz SDRAM, dual-channel support requires two
memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed
With all the updates and everything else thats installed that things gonna run like a snail if it only has 256mb of ram, thats considered bare minimum for an XP installation BEFORE installing any other programs or updates. Get back with flavallee and he can help you trim it down and speed it up, but looks like you probably need more ram if 256mb is all you have.

You are more than right. Evidentally I only have 190 mb ram. Is it possible to upgrade ram in a laptop?
I will have a day off on Thursday so I shall put the many suggestions and advice to work and see what happens. It takes me a little longer to implement the suggestions, as I am a novice, but am anxious to learn. Thank you again.

Yes, you can upgrade laptop ram just as you can desktop ram. That machine can be upgraded to 2gb according to the specs. The reason you`re showing 190mb is that part of it is being used by your video card as shared memory. Follow the link above and you can get detailed specs, download drivers, manuals, and get info on how to upgrade/install more ram. Go here and click on the "scan my computer" button and it will tell you how much and what type you can install. It`s fairly simple, but if you need help with it come on back.
