| Solved: slow computer With school starting next week I am trying to assess whether I need to buy a new laptop for my daughter or if there is something else I can do to speed up her machine. I ran Norton and had it do the fixes, then ran Microtrend and came up with nothing. Have deleted all the temp files and internet stored stuff. It is noticably faster. May just be I am used to my newer speedier one, but it seems really slow on start up. and often takes forever to bring up the web browser. I also defrag and tried to turn off most of the start up stuffl Any input on the below would be appreciated. | I suggest that you click on report and ask a moderator to move your thread to the Virus/malware removal forum. The experts there are the only ones authorized to analyze the HJT reports. They each have a green, gold or blue shield by their name. That forum is really busy so you may have to wait a few hours for a response... Good Luck Vicks |

| Karen: That outdated 2.0.3 beta version of HiJackThis needs to be replaced, so uninstall it. Go here and click the installer link in version 2.0.4 to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4. After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location. After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Let's see what's in that computer. I can tell from the HiJackThis log that the java program is outdated. There may also be other programs that need to be updated, uninstalled, or replaced. Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan. Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click on the "Save List" button. Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Download and save the free version of these programs: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware SUPERAntiSpyware Just download and save them for now and don't do anything with them yet. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Is your daughter going to grade school and going to be home every day, or is she going to a university and going to be away from home? What is she generally going to be using this laptop for? -------------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Recommend Uniblue & File Restore. Tweak the system & see where it takes you. It may cost a few bucks but over a period of time pcs collect all kinds of unwanted stuff. AVG free will help security wise if you can't afford the more expensive version & scan for mal ware. jbrw. |

My daughter is a competitive gymnast and will be homeschooling on-line both by taking her computer to the gym and at home. She is in middle school. | Karen: Concerning the comment in post #6, do not install and use anything from Uniblue, and stay completely away from cleaner/booster/optimizer/tweak/tuneup programs, no matter what they claim they can do. They do little to nothing to improve speed or performance. What they can do is break certain programs and damage the operating system. Enough said about that. ----------------------------------------------------------- Do the following in the order listed: Uninstall these programs because they're outdated or aren't needed or have a better replacement. Adobe Reader 6.0.1 Adobe Reader 8.1.2 Apple Software Update HP Update J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 PC Optimizer Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC 3 If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall of any of them, do so. After they've all been uninstalled, restart the computer again. Go here and click the green icon to download and save Foxit Reader 4.1.1.0805. Go here and click the green icon to download and save Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.21. Go here and click the green icon to download and save Mozilla Firefox 3.6.8. Close all open windows first, then install them. Uncheck and decline to install whatever add-ons offered. If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the install of any of them, do so. After they've all been installed, restart the computer again. Note: Foxit Reader 4.1.1.0805 is a faster and better replacement for Adobe Reader for viewing PDF documents. It also isn't problematic, nor does it place entries in the startup list like Adobe Reader does. Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.21 replaces all the old java versions that you uninstalled. Mozilla Firefox 3.6.8 updates the older version of that browser that's installed. If your daughter isn't going to use that browser and is going to use only Internet Explorer 8, it can be uninstalled. After all of the above has been done, start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file". Save the new log file that appears, then submit it here. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

| Karen: Just a reminder, per my earlier instructions. Just download and save Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware and don't install them nor do anything with them yet. --------------------------------------------------------------- That computer appears to be a HP brand. If it is, advise what the model name and model number is and what the product number on the sticker is. How much RAM does it have? ---------------------------------------------------------------- |

| I meant to tell you to uninstall the Foxit Toolbar that Foxit Reader installs without your knowledge. It's not needed, so uninstall it. It looks like you allowed the Ask Toolbar to be installed when you installed the updated java program. It's not needed, so uninstall it. Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab), uncheck jusched, then click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart. Go to Control Panel - Java - Advanced(tab), click the + in Miscellaneous, uncheck both boxes, then click Apply - OK. After you're done with all of the above, restart your computer. Start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file", then save and submit that new log here. --------------------------------------------------------- You've got 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM in that computer, so it's in good shape. Which model number in this list is that computer? --------------------------------------------------------- |

| I noticed something else strange when I went to the Malwarebytes site. None of the download boxes showed on the screen. My DD had complained that sometimes she doesn't see the things she is suppose to click on. I clicked around the blank areas where I thought the download links might be, and an outlined box showed and started the download. I am guessing some change in the display settings. Any easy way to get those back to default? The tag on the bottom just says DV1000. but it is a notebook. Thanks for all your help. And I learned my lesson a while back on UNIblue when I had to do a system restore after trying their program.
