Slow computer

I have just cleared up several faults, including, Slow computer, freezing up, unresponsive script, and lots of warnings, by uninstalling Trusteer Rapport. It has left me with a slightly faulty outlook express, this is only a warning of an error. When I first installed the "rapport" it was OK, but it has gradually produced the faults I have mentioned. I just thought your readers would like to know.

Please click here to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

My complacency was too good to be true. I now have a long wait before my computer will perform at a reasonable speed. I, also, am getting "non responsive script" warnings at times. I would be happy to do the "Hijack this" thing that you mentioned before. I have run several virus and spyware checks, AVG, Malwarebytes. All to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

This is undoubtedly a series of registry issues this software seems to be known to cause and it apparently does not uninstall well either. There is a fix at the end of this article and if that doesn't work I would try a System Restore if possible to before you installed this. We have to be really careful with new software on old Windows XP, as little is really made with that in mind anymore. Sounds like the software is well intentioned but anything that creates such a strong safety net, has to case other issues. I was beta testing a program for Centercode one time recently that created a totally "safe browser" that could not be penetrated and it eventually took down my XP bench system I was using for the test.

The Dell Dimension 5150 desktop comes with only 512 MB of RAM, but it supports up to 4096 MB(4 GB).

That desktop has 4 slots for adding modules, and they should be installed in pairs, so it's my guess that it currently has 2 - 256 MB modules and has 2 empty slots.

You should seriously consider adding 2 - 256 MB modules in the 2 empty slots and increase the overall amount to 1024 MB(1 GB).

Better yet, install a 512 MB module in all 4 slots and increase the overall amount to 2048 MB(2 GB).

Cick on Fix checked.

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

Please download and run Autoruns.

Click on Options.

Put a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries.

Hit the F5 key to refresh your page.

Only non-Microsoft applications will be showing.

Select the Logon tab and uncheck the following items:

UnlockerAssistant

ISUSPM Startup

dellsupportcenter

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher

Adobe ARM

SunJavaUpdateSched

TomTomHOME.exe

swg

MSMSGS

WMPNSCFG

Other than your antivirus, firewall and Internet connectivity service, the Startup Type on most of your non-Microsoft Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

Do not worry about making the wrong choices. If some programs aren't running properly when their Service's Startup Type is set to Manual, everything can be restored to the way it was before, following the same procedure. There isn't any risk involved.

Run Autoruns again (with a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries).

Select the Services tab.

Only non-Microsoft services will be showing.

Right-click on any service.

Click on Jump to...

You will now be at the exact registry key for that service.

In the right-hand pane, look at the DWORD Start.

The last number at the end of the entry will be either:

(0) for Boot.

(1) for System.

(2) for Automatic.

(3) for Manual.

(4) for Disabled.

If you want to change the value, double-click on Start and change the number accordingly.

Reboot the computer.

You also have the bare minimum of RAM for XP. I'd recommend at least 1 GB for smoother operation.

I think I'll change my category to beginner. I have seen so many things on the computer that I did not know about. I have "manualised" (is there such a word) many of my startup items and I am now going to have a look inside the box. I will increase my RAM and will, if all goes well, give you a final briefing.

Because you're using a 32-bit version of Windows XP, you won't see 4.0 GB listed. It'll be somewhere between 3.0 - 3.5 GB.

You would need to use the 64-bit version of Windows XP in order for the entire 4.0 GB to be recognized and used.

I just wanted to make you aware of this so you didn't assume that something is wrong.
