Unhappy Solved: windows running slow after boot
Hi! My daughter has a DELL Dimension DM051, P4 3.0GHz with 512 RAM. Heaven only knows what she does on it but it takes around 30 minutes to settle down after Windows boots up. In the meantime the hard drive churns away without apparently doing anything and any application works in super slo-mo. Browsing in either Firefox or IE is impossible because the pages take so long to appear. She has scanned with AVG and ZoneAlarm. I've also run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (log attached) and SUPERAntiSpyware (curiously, I wasn't offered a log but I think it only found spyware cookies). I also run HiJack This (log attached). I know this thread is similar to others but they all differ in the cause of their problems and I don't know if this is the same problem as any of those. Any help much appreciated .

I've reported this thread for moving to the malware section, since that is definitely the issue. Please follow the remaining instructions in this link to aid your helper in speeding up the removal. If the computer still has issues after the viruses are removed we can look at them later.

Look at the sticker on the case and advise what the 7-character "service tag number" is of that computer. That'll allow us to determine how much RAM it supports and what type RAM module it uses. It could use at least another 512 MB.

------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP needs to be upgraded to SP3 and Internet Explorer needs to be upgraded to 8.0. Without the SP3 and IE8 upgrades installed, that computer will be unable to stay up-to-date with the regularly-released security-related updates and enhancements.

------------------------------------------------------

I see at least 10 startup entries in your log that don't need to auto-load and run. Some of them don't need to auto-load and run at all, and others can be manually when needed. The smaller the startup is kept, the quicker that computer will startup and settle down, the faster it'll run, and the less chance it'll have of freezes and conflicts.

Ok, many thanks for the replies! Ent - do you still want this thread moved to the malware section? flavalee - (1) I heard a lot of bad things about SP3 affecting drivers, etc, hence took advice not to upgrade. She does regularly upgrade security-related issues though. She never uses Internet Explorer so she never upgraded, even uninstalled it once, but that's less of an issue to update if required. (2) I'll get back to you with the service tag number. (3) Happy to go through the unnecessary auto-load entries you mention.

Shelly:

You MUST update to SP3 and to IE8 and we will not offer any help,or advice if you don't

ENT:

because an antimalware program has removed an adware program doesn't automatically mean that there is a need to move to malware or that there is malware on the computer

I am not saying that there might be some hidden malware but it is more likely to be other casuses with an out of date system & they should be addresed first

DVK01: I had understood that any evidence of malware should be moved to that forum before doing anything else, in case other changes removed the clues to the malware. I thank you for your clarification.

Shelly: Follow DVK01's advice, as he is the one qualified to make a judgement on malware. Upgrade those programs immediately.

Ent:

that is generally true but the "malware" was what is called a "potentialy unwanted program" and although treated as malware by some antiviruses & antispywares

It is normally not stealthily installed but needs your approval to install and has an entry in add/remove programs to remove it that does work. For those reasons it can't really be classed as out & out malware but a potentially unwanted program with possibly undesirable features

It is always safer to report it & let a moderator make a decision but please don't make comments like "malware is the cause"

Let's see what's installed in that computer that may need to be uninstalled, updated, or replaced.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go here to download and save the full 316 MB SP3 upgrade.

Just download and save it for now.

If that desktop has a CD burner, you might also want to burn and save it on a CD-R.

Phew, a lot of conversation there!

Ent / dvk01 - I was only explaining the reasons why the programs were out of date. I'm quite happy to follow your advice and upgrade them. No problem.

Ent - I posted in this section because I didn't know what the problem was, only what I was experiencing. I'd run various anti-malware tools and the problem persisted, so I assumed malware wasn't the problem. I considered it may be due to some corruption to the Windows OS. Sorry if that was wrong but I hope you can now see why I posted here. Anyway (if I looked at the correct label) the serial number is DLY1Y1J.

flavalee - ok, I'll follow your instructions and report back.

According to service tag number DLY1Y1J, your computer is a Dell Dimension 5150/E510 desktop and is almost 5 years old.

Here is the support and software update site for it. I highly suggest that you add and save this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

According to its system configuration section, it came with 2 - 256 MB modules of RAM. It uses DDR2 PC2-3200 modules and it supports up to 4096 MB of RAM. Since 2 of the 4 slots are currently empty, I highly suggest that you add 2 - 256 MB modules or 2 - 512 MB modules in the empty slots.

Uninstall these programs because they're outdated or not needed:

Ad-Aware 6 Personal

Adobe AIR

Adobe Download Manager

Adobe Reader 7.0

Google Update Helper

HP Software Update

Java 2 Runtime Environment SE 1.4.2.03

LimeWire 5.6.1

Logitech Updater

RealPlayer Basic
- unless you're actually using it.

If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall of any of them, do so.

After they've all been uninstalled, restart the computer.

------------------------------------------------------------

Java(TM) 6 Update 19 needs to be updated. Go here and click the green icon to download and save Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.21(6 Update 21).

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then install it. Uncheck and decline to install the extra crap it offers.

Adobe Reader 9.3.3 or Foxit Reader 4.1.1.0805 are available so you can have a program for opening and viewing and printing PDF documents and manuals. Foxit is smaller and faster than Adobe, but it's your choice which one to install.

Download and save it, close all open windows first, then install it. Uncheck and decline to install the extra crap it offers.

After they've been installed, restart the computer.

------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log file that appears, then submit it here.

If Windows Live Messenger is being used in conjunction with a Logitech webcam in that computer, it's my guess it's bogging down or freezing up within a few minutes of being started.

I've discovered from experience that the combination of both uses a lot of processing and memory and graphic power.
