For XP you can just go to start/control panel/network connections.
Right click the connection and click disable.
Reenable the same way.

Right click "my computer" and click properties.
Click the hardware tab then click the device manager button.
Expand network adapters.
Right click the network adapter and click properties.
Make sure it is not disabled there.
If it is,the hardware is disabled.
Reenable it.

What is the name of the network adapter?
If it says 1394 or something, that is firewire
and not the normal network adapter.
It is possible that the adapter is disabled in the bios setup.

802.11g is actually a wireless network card.
Is this a laptop?
Is there a switch to turn the wireless on and off?
If you are trying to use a wired network connection,
it sounds like it may be disabled in the bios setup
or the drivers are not installed or both.

Usually,as the computer just starts,it will say press a certain key
to enter setup.
Hit that key to enter the bios.
Make sure the onboard lan is enabled.
Save settings and exit.

If it doesn't show up in network connections,
check the windows device manager and see
if there is an unknown device listed.
If there is,it needs a driver.
If not,it is disabled in the bios.
